Union President Stacy Davis Gates

Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates has called school choice racist and made it her mission to kill an Illinois scholarship program for low-income children. So how did Ms. Gates try to explain herself this week after press reports that she has enrolled her son in a private Catholic high school?

“Dear Union Sibling,” began her email to fellow teachers. She said that black students have “limited” options on the city’s south and west sides: “It forced us to send our son, after years of attending a public school, to a private high school so he could live out his dream of being a soccer player while also having a curriculum that can meet his social and emotional needs.”

Ms. Gates’s desire to do what’s best for her child is laudable. What’s not is to do that while denying other families the same choice. The school where her son is enrolled reportedly costs her $16,000 a year. What about those who can’t afford such a school? Illinois’s Invest in Kids program funds about 9,000 scholarships, and last year it had 31,000 applications. But the program is scheduled to sunset, and that’s exactly what the teachers unions have demanded.

“Here is the truth: If you are a Black family living in a Black community, high-quality neighborhood schools have been the dream, not the reality,” Ms. Gates’s email says. There’s no arguing about that. For some schools on the south side, the percentage of students who can read or do math at grade level is in the single digits. But then she insists, as the teachers unions always do, that the answer is spending yet more money to “undo the decades of systemic underinvestment.”

Chicago Teachers Strike

Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates has been vehemently opposed to school choice, calling it ‘racist.’ But she reportedly put one of her own children in private school. Choice for me, but not for thee?

Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates vehemently opposes school choice, but she reportedly now sends one of her three children to a private high school in Chicago.

She and the CTU have been actively working to kill Illinois’ only school choice program, the Invest in Kids tax credit scholarship program. While Davis Gates apparently can choose an alternative to failing Chicago Public Schools for her child, she is actively working to kill that choice for low-income families: Invest in Kids expires at the end of 2023.

Davis Gates previously stressed to Chicago Magazine the importance of someone in her role sending her kids to public school.

“I can’t advocate on behalf of public education and the children of this city and educators in this city without it taking root in my own household,” Davis Gates said.

She also said, “School choice was actually the choice of racists. It was created to avoid integrating schools with Black children.”

Davis Gates’ child is listed on a private school athletic roster. She follows him on social media. The school’s principal declined comment and Davis Gates did not respond to media requests for comment.

Education officials are reacting to concerns over political activism, rather than education, being in the classroom.

With the new school year in full swing for most of the state, national and state education officials made visits to Illinois schools.

Before a visit to Fairfield Elementary in Springfield featuring Gov. J.B. Pritzker and U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Illinois U.S. Mary Miller, R-Oakland, released a statement saying Pritzker and Cardona oppose parental rights “and believe young children should be indoctrinated with radical ‘gender ideology’ politics in the classroom behind their parents’ backs.”

“Parents should be in charge of their child’s education, not radical politicians like Pritzker and Cardona who believe teachers should be discussing chemical castration and gender reassignment with your child,” Miller said.

Shannon Adcock, founder of the parents’ rights group Awake Illinois, said educators must focus on education.

“I would hope they would start talking about literacy, about proficiency and how they’re actually going to focus on academic outcomes in the classroom, not political activism, not waging continued war on parental rights,” Adcock told The Center Square.

Pritzker said despite state data showing some areas with low proficiencies in math and reading, the state is educating children.

“We always want to do better. We want our kids to do better, and in fact we’ve invested in that in the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said as he praised federal taxpayer resources for public education.

The battle over the potential sale of South Barrington Park District land to the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is headed to court.

A request for a temporary restraining order filed by residents opposing the sale could be heard by Cook County Judge Claire J. Quish on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the district’s attorney, Scott Puma, confirmed Thursday.

The hearing will be held virtually at 10 a.m., Puma said.

The church is set to buy the 34-acre site, which is south of where Bartlett Road and Route 59 meet, for about $1.7 million. It wants to erect a house of worship and a school there.

District leaders postponed a real estate closing scheduled for earlier this week after receiving copies of a legal complaint and a request for a temporary restraining order seeking to block the sale.

The complaint — targeting the church, the park district and the village — was brought forth by anonymous South Barrington residents, documents indicate.

People demonstrated against the deal at the park district’s community center before Wednesday night’s board meeting and then spoke against the plan during the meeting. Many are residents of the Woods of South Barrington neighborhood, which is just south of the property.

South Barrington Park

The South Barrington Park District’s sale of unwanted, vacant land to a church has been halted amid community opposition and legal action.

“The real estate closing is on hold,” Scott Puma, an attorney for the park district, said Wednesday.

Puma’s comments came hours before a planned public demonstration against the deal. It’s scheduled for 5 p.m. at the park district’s community center, 3 Tennis Club Lane.

The park district board is set to meet there at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The land deal isn’t on the agenda, but critics have said they plan to pack the meeting room.

The district postponed the real estate closing after receiving copies of a legal complaint and a request for a temporary restraining order seeking to block the sale of the 34-acre site, which is at Bartlett Road and Route 59, to the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

The complaint — targeting the church, the park district and the village — was brought forth by anonymous South Barrington residents, documents indicate.

The complaint hasn’t yet been heard by a Cook County judge, so no decisions have been made in the matter.

We need your help to keep up the momentum.

Biden

By John Kass
August 23, 2023

Remember when CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post and Chicago Tribune—among other liberal media outlets–gathered together and in one loud angry voice decided to tell President Joe Biden to stop lying?

No?

Funny, but I don’t remember it either. Not like I remember their unctuous slogans about how they’re the saviors of American democracy even as they spit on it and warn Americans against committing a “Thought Crime”, and protect political “leaders” who’d sell us out to foreign adversaries like China.

National media has been too busy kissing Joe’s behind to call out his many lies. They protect him from reality until even they must admit that the old man is wandering around with no clothes, the same way that Chicago media kissed Daley’s behind to protect him from the reality that he and the Illinois Democrats were spending bankrupt Chicago and bankrupt Illinois into oblivion.

Reality is tough. It bites those who can’t bite back.

But the other day there was China Joe commiserating with survivors of the Maui wildfires mourning the untold loss of lives and property destroyed by the wildfires in Hawaii. An Obama connected bureaucrat who strongly believes in “water equity” was behind the delay of hours and hours to release water to fight the fires. The people died from idiocy, and politics. And to make it worse, the survivors were lied to by Biden. CNN declared him to be “empathizer in chief.”

Biden couldn’t be bothered to visit Maui for days, until finally he cut short one of his vacations to show up on Maui. And in true China Joe fashion, like the old man at the end of the bar in the neighborhood tavern bragging about his exploits that never happened, Joe made the wildfires all about himself.

Not the people who suffered. But himself. He lied and kept on lying, as is his way.
