Why are Americans becoming more stupid? Our entire education system needs a revolution

By Joel Kotkin | UnHeard
“The empires of the future are the empires of the mind,” said Winston Churchill. And judging by the state of education in America, it seems both of those empires could soon crumble. The dysfunction is evident from top to bottom: from Ivy League outposts down to the secondary schools. Both are producing a generation that is ill-informed, illiterate and innumerate. In other words, a generation increasingly ill-suited to function as productive citizens in a democracy.
One might expect, then, that the creation of a raft of new universities and schools focused on doing something different would seem like a fundamental necessity. After all, young people are deserting college in droves, with enrolments down by 15% over the past decade; in the lower grades, it’s common to hear talk of “zombie schools”, the product of more than 20% of pupils being “chronically absent”.
And yet, the emergence of these still-small shoots have terrified the educratic establishment. Some claim the shift in emphasis towards classics and civics, now occurring in places such as Florida’s New College, is “sinister development” by nefarious Right-wingers. Similarly, the teachers’ unions have resisted a number of moves to create charter schools — which increase choice in the public system — because they are part of a “war on schools”.
In some cases, the defence of failure is breathtaking. Blue states such as Illinois have worked to all but eliminate charters, even as the Land of Lincoln boasts 53 schools where not one student can do grade-level math and 30 where none can do so in English. These schools are overwhelmingly in Chicago, where a significant increase in spending per student since 2019 seems to have made no impact.
Yet Chicago’s failures are wholly representative. The most recent National Assessments of Educational Progress found that only 27% of eighth graders are proficient in reading, 20% in math, 22% in geography, and a mere 13% in US History. The Covid lockdowns may have accelerated the deterioration, but scores have continued to decline since the pandemic ended. IQ scores, which had been rising for decades, are now falling even among college students.

A source of much debate, press coverage and the resignation of a District official, the 34 +/- property known as “Area N” owned by the South Barrington Park District will be auctioned (again) on February 28th.

The annual State of the Greater Barrington Area Economic Summit fittingly took place on Valentine’s Day, given how area leaders showered the new development taking place in their communities with love.
Sponsored by the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce, the event Wednesday featured leaders from Barrington and its neighbors offering updates on what’s new in their towns.
Barrington Village President Karen Darch discussed the long-awaited development of the Golden Triangle, a downtown area bordered by Hough Street, Liberty Street and the Union Pacific railroad tracks. Compasspoint Development plans to build 125 apartments, 13,000 square feet of retail space, two new restaurants, and 37 car condominiums on the 6.2-acre site.
Deer Park Village President Greg Rusteberg said a new tax increment financing district along Rand Road has attracted four projects. Persin & Robbin Jewelers will be breaking ground at Lake-Cook and Quentin roads this spring, he added.
Happenings in Long Grove include new ownership for the Village Tavern, which has been operating since 1847, and the Sock Monkey Museum being inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records, Village President Bill Jacob said.

Editorial note: Zalusky found nothing of interest to report for Barrington Hills. Apparently, President Cecola mentioned nothing about the pending proposed annexation of properties adjacent to South Barrington and the Cook County Forest Preserves by the Village. He likely didn’t want to be asked questions he was incapable of answering.

Illinois bill would give tax credit to residents fleeing states with abortion, gender-affirming care bans

People and health care providers forced to leave states with laws limiting access to gender-affirming medical care and abortion may soon be eligible for a $500 tax credit if they move to Illinois.
Legislation filed Thursday by Illinois state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Democrat, would create the income tax credit. The benefit would be available only to taxpayers who permanently relocate to Illinois from a state with more stringent abortion laws or laws that restrict access to other “lawful health care,” including gender-affirming care, for the purposes of either providing or receiving treatment.
Public school teachers who relocate to Illinois because of “content-based restrictions” in their home state that prevent them from addressing subjects like race, gender identity or sexual orientation in the classroom would also be eligible for the tax credit, according to Cassidy’s bill.
Cassidy in a statement shared to social media late Thursday said the measure is meant to ease the burdens of moving for individuals and families who feel they have been left with no other choice but to uproot their lives and move elsewhere.
“When I left Florida in 1991 seeking a place that was more accepting of the LGBTQ community, it took months of planning and expenses,” said Cassidy, one of just two openly LGBTQ lawmakers in the Illinois General Assembly.
“When I imagine a family with a trans kid being forced to flee their home just to access care for their child, or a couple facing a devastating pregnancy outcome realizing they’re simply not safe where they’ve made their home needing to act immediately, it’s just overwhelming to contemplate,” she added.
