Anybody heard from BACOG lately?

We’ve found the Barrington Area Council Of Governments (BACOG) to be of somewhat questionable relevance and value to the community at times over the years. Still, we’ve tried to keep our readers apprised of their activities and schedule, thus the reason for our “bumping” them today.

The last BACOG meeting minutes posted publicly to their website are from March (of this year at least). It would be nice to obtain updates (if nothing else for entertainment).

Also, BACOG has yet to publish their 2024–2025 Fiscal Year (July – June) meeting schedule.  Since we do notify our readers when meetings are scheduled, it would be just ducky if the dates could be posted.

Last, our own battling Brian “Yabba Dabba Doo” Cecola’s term as 2023-2024 BACOG Board Chair ended in June. His wit and valuable insights will be sorely missed, of course, but who is the new chair?

It’s been a long time coming, but Longmeadow Parkway bridge just weeks away from opening

After nearly three decades of planning and construction, the new four-lane Longmeadow Parkway bridge over the Fox River in northern Kane County is nearly ready to open.

Although a date has not be announced, Kane County officials say a tentative ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for later this month. It’s the final piece in the Longmeadow Parkway, a 5.6-mile stretch of road between Huntley Road and Route 62 that crosses through Carpentersville, Algonquin and Barrington Hills.

“The construction contract’s completion date is Sept. 15,” Kane County spokeswoman Julie Mann said. “There’s a possibility that the contractor may finish the project soon, but it is still too early to tell at this point.”

Contractors need to complete bike path paving, pavement striping, traffic signals and landscaping before it’s ready for use, Mann said.

While most of the road is now open and construction of the bridge itself was done in 2020, completion of work near the bridge took years longer than anticipated. Lead was discovered near the site and had to be removed and final paving from Sandbloom/Williams Road east to the Bolz Road connector needed to be done.

“Everyone is happy that it’s finally completed,” Carpentersville Village President John Skillman said.

D220 to make “concerted effort” to improve student attendance this school year

At the July 23rd 220 Board of Education meeting, the Board heard a presentation about student attendance in Barrington 220. This has been an area of focus for the district as it has been a national challenge experienced by school districts nationwide over the past few years. The average daily percentage of Barrington 220 students attending school in 2024 was 94.5%. For the 2024-25 school year, the district will take the following steps to improve student attendance:

  • Continue to streamline and optimize attendance policies and procedures across schools
  • Analyze attendance trends across student groups and grade levels
  • Increase opportunities to connect with students and families to support chronically absent and chronically truant students
  • Continue to provide unique learning opportunities and experiences that help make all Barrington schools a place where students want to be

Stupid is as stupid does? “Chicago mayor defends campaign spending $30K on hair, makeup”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is defending spending a reported $30,000 on hair and makeup from his campaign coffers.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported last week Johnson’s campaign spent $30,000 on hair and makeup in one year. During a wide ranging news conference Wednesday, Johnson was asked about the “awkward elephant in the room” and said he supports small businesses.

“We’ll make sure that you know I encourage all of you in this room, support small businesses,” Johnson said. “Go get your hair and makeup done by Black people in particular.”

Using records from the Illinois State Board of Elections, campaign finance tracker Illinois Sunshine shows the Friends of Brandon Johnson candidate committee spent $4,000 at Anthony Jones Salon on “event expenses,” and $23,375 at Makeup Majic for “event expenses” in the past year.

It wasn’t just hair and makeup expenses Johnson defended.

“Our campaign spends money on food,” Johnson said. “We support Black and brown owned businesses, women owned businesses. Printing. There are a number of things that my campaign spends dollars on.”

To those who question such spending, Johnson said everyone has their own opinions.

“If they don’t believe it’s a good use to support small businesses, Black and brown businesses, that is something that they’ll have to deal with when they meet their maker,” Johnson said.

Yes, it happened again – another truck hits the historic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge in Long Grove

Get ready to shake your head and roll your eyes because someone hit the Long Grove bridge – again.

For the second time in eight days, a truck trying to squeeze under the historic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge hit the top of the structure, causing the vehicle to rock back and forth.

This time, however, the bridge was not hit by a box truck, which seems to be the main culprit in many of these things.

This time the bridge was whacked by a valve at the top of a gas or water truck, the video shows.

The top nozzle of the truck hit the bridge, causing the vehicle to lurch from side to side before continuing and squeezing through the other side.

The truck went exceptionally slow through the bridge, however, and it did stop for a second when the truck rattled back and forth.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli was not available to provide information about the latest incident.

This is the latest in a series of bridge hits that the historic structure has withstood in 2024 and the fifth in the last eight days.

Your truck won’t fit: historic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge hit – again (Enough already, Long Grove officials!)

An oversized box truck got wedged under the historic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge in Long Grove – again.

Motorists in Long Grove sent pictures to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner Wednesday showing the oversized box truck wedged under the canopy of the bridge.

The bridge is located at Robert Parker Coffin Road and Schaeffer Road in Long Grove.

The truck attempted to cross the bridge and struck the canopy, becoming wedged directly under a sign saying the bridge is only 8 feet, 6 inches tall.

A tow truck has responded to the scene and it’s unclear at this time if the bridge sustained damage.

It also remains unclear which way the truck was heading when it got wedged under the bridge.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli was unavailable to provide information about the incident Wednesday.

Illinois lawmakers debate regulation of car insurance rates

Illinois legislators are debating a proposal that would give state government more power over car insurance companies.

State Rep. Will Guzzardi, D-Chicago (Of course), introduced House Bill 4767, which would force insurance companies to apply for state approval to change rates. According to Illinois Secretary of State Alexei Giannoulias, the measure would give the Department of Insurance broad authority to regulate rate hikes.

“The department could reject or modify excessive rate hikes and end the use of non-driving factors to set rates,” Giannoulias said.

State Rep. Jeff Keicher, R-Sycamore, said this idea failed in the state of Washington.

“Sixty-one percent of the auto insurance customers in Washington state saw a rate increase directly attributable to no longer able to use credit,” Keicher said.

Keicher said companies consider credit, but not income or race when setting rates.

Guzzardi said factors like credit score and zip code account for decades of discrimination.

There are reasons why car insurance is more expensive in Chicago, Keicher said.
