“The CAG is a collection of community representatives and serves as the focal point for the exchange of information between government entities and the local community. The CAG is made up of representatives of diverse community interests, local government officials, community representatives, property owners and residents, and stakeholders with technical expertise. The CAG assists IDOT in making better decisions on transportation related projects that benefit the community and environment. Members are invited based upon who they represent with the goal being an even distribution from each interest area.

The application window for the Community Advisory Group is now closed.

CAG Meeting #6 was held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 10am-12pm. Materials from CAG Meeting #6 are available below.

Editorial notes: The reader who was kind enough to forward this tip noted: “Of considerable note are the currently proposed designs for the Bateman Road and Old Sutton Road intersections: non-signalized Right-In/Right-Out with a U-turn, as depicted (below):”

Also, to appease the Riding Clan, IDOT included a graphic of a, “Potential Pedestrian Underpass,” as seen below:

Last, it’s unclear if the current Village Roads & Bridges Chair (A.B.) was invited to the meeting. We highly doubt it (for obvious reasons).

Construction activity has continued since Route 14 reopened on its new temporary four-lane roadway at the end of October.

Over the past month, crews have completed the following work:

  • Installed sheeting just east of IL 59 (Hough Street). This sheeting will allow crews to safely excavate the area needed for the new Route 14 culvert, a storm sewer that will carry the relocated Flint Creek beneath the roadway.
  • Substantially completed the pump pit structure for the storm sewer pump station. Most of the surrounding area has been designed to drain naturally away from the Route 14 underpass. However, during rain events, the sloped roadway sections will channel water toward the lowest point of the underpass. Large storm sewers will capture this water and direct it underground to the pump station, located just east of Jiffy Lube. The pump station will collect water in the completed pit, pump it back to the surface level, and release it slowly into the relocated Flint Creek. This entire drainage system has been engineered to ensure positive drainage and has been reviewed and approved by the state, Department of Natural Resources, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
  • Installed foundations for future noise walls around the project perimeter.
  • Continued relocating utilities.

Weather and material availability permitting, the contractor plans to begin excavation and installation of the Route 14 culvert over the next month, along with continued construction of the pump station. As utility relocation progresses, the contractor will refine plans for early next year. Upcoming work is expected to include the following: preparation for retaining walls, additional utility installations, and construction of the railroad bridge structure.

“The Village of Barrington is excited to announce that Route 14 has officially reopened on its new temporary four-lane roadway, along with the temporary two-lane Lake Zurich Road. Both roadways opened today, Oct. 31, at 3:30 p.m.

During the full temporary closure, which began in September, crews completed several key components to prepare for this major milestone, including:

  • Four new lanes of pavement
  • Temporary railroad tracks
  • A full railroad crossing, including two pedestrian gates
  • Temporary sidewalk

The Village currently anticipates substantial completion of the Route 14 underpass project in 2027 and will continue to share updates as major milestones are reached.

In the meantime, the public is encouraged to support Barrington’s local businesses and restaurants throughout the ongoing construction period.

Temporary Route 14 Closure Update: Progress is Happening!

It has been a busy couple of weeks on the ground as we work toward opening up the temporary four-lane Route 14 roadway and the temporary two-lane Lake Zurich Road. Here’s what’s been happening behind the scenes:

  • Pavement removal on Lake Zurich Road and Route 14
  • Earthwork and grading for the temporary roads
  • Delivery and grading of ballast stone for the temporary Canadian National Railway (CN) train tracks

What’s still to come?

  • Completion of the temporary train tracks and installation of new railway gate equipment
  • A shift in train traffic
  • Utility relocations
  • Completion of both temporary road surfaces and lane line markings

As a result of ongoing utility relocation and the more manual track-building process being utilized by CN, the expected opening is now anticipated by the end of October, weather permitting. All parties are working hard to get everything ready and are exploring ways to open things even earlier, if possible.

Thank you for your continued patience and support of all Barrington businesses during this time.

Below are some aerial shots of the transformation. Things are looking great from above!

Appointed State Senate Darby Hills seized the opportunity for a photo op celebrating the groundbreaking of the US Route 14 Grade Separation on April 23rd. Last week, Hills submitted her letter of resignation as Trustee for the Village of Barrington Hills effective September 1st.

Temporary Full Route 14 Closure Starting Monday, 9/15

“Please be advised that Route 14 will be fully closed from north of Valencia Road (Ave) to Hough Street beginning Monday, Sept. 15. The work is part of the Route 14 underpass project. The temporary closure, expected to last approximately four weeks, will allow Canadian National Railway to complete the temporary railroad tracks and shift train traffic. Once the railroad work is completed and the gap in the temporary roadway is constructed, Route 14 will reopen to full four-lane traffic on the temporary roadway.

Detour routes will be clearly marked with signage along Hough Street (Route 59) and Main Street (Lake Cook Road) starting Monday morning, Sept. 15. Please reference the combined traffic and detour map below and attached.

Note that all local businesses, including the Barrington Area Library, will remain open and accessible during the closure. Shorely Drive local access will also be maintained for residents.

Please:

  • Follow posted detours
  • Plan for extra travel time
  • Drive cautiously
  • Avoid speeding and distracted driving

If you have not already done so, please consider signing up for Route 14 project update emails on the dedicated project website.”

“This past month, almost all of the temporary Route 14 roadway and temporary railroad track was completed. The current lane closures on Route 14 allowed the contractors and utility companies to complete the required storm sewer, water main, grading and utility preparation work.

What’s Coming Next:

  • Temporary Full Route 14 Closure (Scheduled to begin Sept. 15): A temporary full closure of Route 14 is required for approximately four weeks so the Canadian National Railway can install temporary railroad tracks across Route 14 and shift train traffic onto these tracks. Once train traffic is shifted, the temporary roadway can be completed across the existing rail track. During this time, a signed detour will be in place via Lake Cook Road and Hough Street. Please allow for extra travel time and plan accordingly. Included below are two visuals: a traffic route map active during the closure and a graphic that provides more details on the scope of work during the closure.
  • Four-Lane Temporary Route 14 Roadway Opens (Anticipated the week of Oct. 13): Once all temporary rail and roadway work is complete, Route 14 will reopen on the temporary roadway pavement with two full lanes of traffic open in both directions.

Note that all local businesses, including the Barrington Area Library, will remain open and accessible during the closure. Shorely Drive local access will also be maintained for residents.

Additional traffic alerts will be shared with the community next week.

Please help spread the word by sharing this information with others. Thank you for your patience and continued support of our local businesses during the closure!”

The Barrington Area Library posted the following late yesterday:

“PLEASE NOTE: Beginning Wednesday, August 27, extensive construction work will begin to rebuild the Library’s entrance driveway, as part of the Route 14 project. This work requires that the driveway be reduced to accommodate only one lane of traffic at a time. Traffic exiting the Library lot will be stopped at a distance from the traffic light, to allow plenty of room for incoming traffic. The traffic light camera will be adjusted to sense the traffic waiting to exit. Please allow extra time and use an abundance of caution and patience when traveling through this area.

Each half of the driveway must be excavated, stoned, poured, and cured before traffic can be switched onto the new driveway half, when the process will begin again. The construction company estimates that this project will take more than two weeks to complete.

In general, we anticipate that visitors will have access to the Library throughout the Route 14 project. We will continue do our best to keep you informed of these situations. We encourage you to visit the Village of Barrington’s dedicated website for the project, where you may also sign up for email updates.

Pro tip: this is great time to try some of our convenient, innovative services like Borrow By Mail and other remote pick-up and return locations!”

“Please be advised that Route 14 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Valencia Avenue and Hough Street beginning Monday, Aug. 4. The work is part of the Route 14 underpass project. Access to adjacent roads and driveways will remain open. See the traffic map below for more details.

The one-lane closures will remain in effect until the temporary full closure of Route 14 occurs (anticipated as early as Sept. 15). A temporary full closure of Route 14 is required for approximately four weeks so Canadian National Railway can complete the temporary railroad tracks and shift train traffic. During that time, a detour will be signed along Lake Cook Road and Hough Street. Once the rail line is raised and the gap in the temporary roadway is constructed, Route 14 will reopen with full four-lane traffic.

For the latest information, please visit the dedicated project website at us14underpass.com and subscribe to receive email updates.”
