District 220 posts “Cold Action Day” statement

“As you are aware, we have experienced very cold temperatures over the past couple of days that will continue into tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for our area for Tuesday. Therefore, in alignment with our Severe Cold Response Plans, Barrington 220 will implement a Cold Action Day on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025.

COLD ACTION DAY: All Barrington 220 schools will be OPEN and several protocols will be in place to ensure student safety, such as suspending all outside activities during arrival and throughout the day.

Extracurricular activities after school will be evaluated and may be suspended if conditions persist; updates will be posted on each school’s website. Please check school websites for the most up-to-date information.

Thank you for helping us ensure the safety of all Barrington 220 students.”

Repairs to U.S. Route 14 Canadian National Rail Grade Crossing in Barrington Thursday

“The Canadian National Railway will be completing track repairs on the U.S. Route 14 rail grade crossing in Barrington on Thursday, Dec. 12, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. This work comes after irregular track geometry conditions were identified within the grade crossing, necessitating immediate remediation to ensure safety and reliability.

Repairs involve temporarily closing the two center roadway lanes, removing the existing concrete crossing surface, repairing the track structure, and reinstalling the crossing surface.

During this time, flaggers and signage will be in place to guide traffic through the area safely. Drivers are urged to use caution and plan for potential delays. The project is expected to be completed within the same day.”

Barrington area food drive set for tomorrow

Barrington will be hosting a food drive to benefit the Barrington and Cuba township food pantries Saturday.

The event takes place from 9AM to noon in the Metra North Commuter Lot near Wool Street and Klingenberg Lane.

Those interested in participating should bring non-expired, nonperishable food to help fill a public works truck. Cash donations will also be accepted.

To The Residents Of The Barrington Hills Park District Cook, Lake and McHenry (But not Kane?) Counties, Illinois

Elections will be held to fill the following offices at the:

Consolidated election to be held April 1, 2025.

Park District Commissioner: Number of positions (2); .4-year term.

Candidates must file their certificates of nomination with the Barrington Hills Park District
designated representative (?).

Filing Period:

The filing of nomination petitions will be accepted at 361 Bateman Road, Barrington Hills IL 60010, in the Riding Center’s Meeting Room, November 12th through Monday November 18th at the following times:

Monday, November 12, 9AM-3 PM 

Tuesday, November 13, through Friday, November 15 Filing By Appointment Only.

Cary man becomes second person this year in Illinois to die from West Nile virus

Officials announced that a Cary man has become the second person this year in Illinois to die from West Nile virus, the first West Nile death in McHenry County in six years.

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) said Friday the individual was in their 80s and developed symptoms in August before dying from the illness.

The death marks the first West Nile virus death in McHenry County since 2018. It is the second West Nile virus death in 2024 in Illinois.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said the decedent was an 84-year-old man who resided in Cary.

He died at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington on Wednesday after being in the hospital since late last month.

The health department announced his case to the public last week as a warning.

Late last month, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced the state’s first human West Nile virus death in a Lake County resident in their 80s, who had an onset of symptoms in mid-August and died soon after.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports there have been 34 human cases of West Nile virus in 2024.

Communities across the suburbs will observe the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with remembrance ceremonies.

Lake Barrington 9/11 Ceremony: 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Lake Barrington Shores Veterans Memorial Garden. Hosted by the Veterans of Lake Barrington Shores. Visit lakebarrington.org/news.aspx.

Palatine Patriot Day Ceremony: 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Palatine Firefighters Memorial, North Brockway and West Slade. Palatine Fire Department members and retirees will march to the memorial site from fire station 85 at 39 E. Colfax St. accompanied by the fire department honor guard. Members of the Palatine fire and police departments will lower the flag, place a wreath at the memorial, and perform a ceremonial ringing of the bell to signify a firefighter’s last call of duty. Barrington schools on lockdown as police hunt murder suspect

Authorities are looking for a Chicago man considered armed and dangerous in the area near Route 14 between Cuba Road and Lake Barrington

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and multiple law enforcement are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a Chicago homicide. Osceola Little, 38, fled on foot from Chicago police from a business near Route 14 and Pepper Road.

He is described at 5-feet-10-inches in height and weighing approximately 165 pounds. People should call 911, but are advised not to approach if they see someone matching his description.

Barrington Area Unit District 220 informed families Tuesday schools have been placed on a lockdown due to police activity.

The district said it puts the schools in “secure the building and teach” mode when there is a police situation outside the buildings.

“Access to these buildings is also prohibited at this time,” the message said. “All students and staff are safe and class is continuing as normal.”

Almost Home Foundation rescue seeks foster homes

Almost Home Foundation dog, Cinderella, is available to foster or adopt immediately.

Almost Home Foundation’s (AHF) kennel expansion is underway. A larger facility will mean more lives saved; however, the rescue cannot house dogs or cats at the kennel during construction.

Almost Home has transitioned to being a fully foster-based rescue and will need to rely strictly on foster homes for several months. That means foster homes are needed now, more than ever.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a foster, now is the time. Homeless dogs and cats need you.

Fostering for AHF is free. You supply the home and the love, and AHF will take care of the rest — food, medical, and basic supplies. They also provide support and free, optional training classes for its dog fosters.

Pictured is Cinderella, just one example of a good pup in need of a foster home. She is 1-year-old and is a very happy, friendly and affectionate girl who loves people. She is great with other dogs, too. She would do well in a home with a playful pup like herself, or she could be your one and only.

Hough Street headaches likely to worsen starting tomorrow

A recent post from the Village of Barrington states:

“The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is resurfacing Route 59 south of Main Street (Lake Cook Road) this summer. Curb/sidewalk work is complete, and the pavement milling work is anticipated to begin on Monday, July 15, weather permitting.

The milling work is expected to take two to three days to complete. This work will include longer lane closures with flaggers directing traffic around the work zone, which will impact travel times. Any questions or concerns can be reported to IDOT via their online portal at www.idot.illinois.gov/about-idot/contact-us”
