The applicant for the proposed Development Plan is Area N Development LLC of 550 Albion Avenue, Schaumburg, Illinois 60193. Carol Meyn Beese | December 17, 1930 – June 6, 2024

“Carol Meyn Beese, age 93, of Edina, MN, formerly of Barrington, IL, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024. Preceded in death by her parents Rudy and Lucile Meyn, and husband Ronald E. Beese, she is survived by her loving sister Suzanne Froberg, daughter Lorena Beese (Homme Hellinga) of Durham, NC, son Mark Beese (Karen) of Edina, MN, and grandchildren Carolyn Brewster (Danny), Kristin Gorge (Alec), Lauren Beese, and Robert Hellinga.

Carol was born on December 17, 1930, in Maywood, IL. She attended Proviso High School, DePauw University and Notre Dame University. She married Ron Beese on February 13, 1954, the love of her life. They moved to Barrington, IL in 1956 to begin their family.

Carol Beese was devoted to her family, bringing them together from across the country for singing, stories, and laughter every holiday season. Carol loved music, chocolate, the color red, leading adventures abroad, and family expeditions to National Parks. She brought joy with her wherever she went. She had a remarkable talent for knowing exactly what to say to make someone feel welcome, appreciated, and loved.

Carol also was devoted to her community in Barrington, Illinois. For 57 years she served on boards for numerous organizations including the Buehler YMCA, William Rainey Harper College, Family Service of South Lake County, the Council on Aging, Barrington Area Arts Council, Barrington Park District, First Federal of Barrington, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Barrington school district 220, and the Barrington Volunteer Bureau. Carol was also a beloved active member of the Barrington United Methodist church and Rotary Club. One of her biggest passions was shaping the development of Ron Beese Park, an 80 acre Barrington park named in honor of her late husband.

Carol acted as a role model paving the way for women looking to make a difference professionally in business and community service. She became the President and Executive Director of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce and was one of the pioneering women in this field, at local, state and national levels. For 32 years, she guided the growth of the Barrington Chamber from 50 to 760 business and professional members. She was a director of the Illinois State Chamber, served on the Board of Regents for the U.S. Chamber Institute, and was a member of the U.S Chamber of Commerce Advisory Committee. In 1995 Carol was named Illinois chamber executive of the year. Upon her retirement, the Governor of the State of Illinois proclaimed December 8, 2000, to be CAROL BEESE DAY in Illinois. She received the Illinois Woman of Achievement Award in 2001.

Post-retirement Carol continued to be active in the community, serving on advisory boards and volunteering for Rotary projects. Carol moved to Edina, Minnesota in 2016 to be closer to family.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Meetinghouse Church, 6200 Colonial Way, Edina, MN, Wednesday, June 26, 11 am.

Buyer of nearby South Barrington property known as “Area N” revealed

“Area N”

“We are the representatives of Area N Development LLC, the company that won the public auction conducted by the South Barrington Park District in February of this year for the Area N parcel.  We are the same group (Fourth Avenue) that submitted the previous winning bid for the property, and we have already completed extensive work on the development plans.

The Area N parcel, at the intersection of Route 59 and Bartlett Road, has been overgrown and vacant for nearly two decades. We plan to develop the property into a campus for a new meeting house for a church and a private school for our children. Of the parcel’s 34 acres, roughly 25 acres will be green space under our plan, of which about 6 acres will remain wetlands.

We are members of the Plymouth Brethen Christian Church (PBCC).  Our congregation is small – about 65 families in total with about 200 members.  We have lived in the Chicago area since the late 1800s.  We are a quiet, law-abiding group of people, who believe in being good neighbors, and supporting the communities in which we live.

We look forward to meeting our future neighbors over the next several months as we proceed through the various zoning and municipal approval processes needed to start work on Area N.”

South Barrington Park District again auctions land, but identity of winning bidder isn’t clear

Thirty-four acres of undeveloped South Barrington Park District land has once again sold at auction, but the identity of the winning bidder isn’t clear.

A representative of a group called Area N Development LLC offered $2.3 million for the property at Bartlett Road and Route 59 during a live, in-person auction held Wednesday at park district headquarters. But no limited liability company with that name is registered with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

After winning the auction, the representative didn’t provide contact information for the company he represented or its owners, said Lee Filas, a spokesman for the park district.

A company called Area N Development is registered in Delaware. According to public Deleware Division of Corporations data, it formed Feb. 20 and is based in Wilmington, Delaware. Its registered agent is a Las Vegas company called InCorp Services that helps others incorporate.

The park district board unanimously approved the sale to Area N Development at its scheduled meeting Wednesday night, Filas said. A closing date wasn’t immediately publicized.

The park district pulled out of a deal last year to sell the property — a former tree nursery that’s sometimes called “Area N” by the district and local residents — after concerns arose about the religious group that was the only bidder in a May 2023 auction.

After weeks of public pressure, the South Barrington Park District board has decided not to sell 34 acres of undeveloped land to a religious group.

The board on Wednesday night voted 4-0 to cancel its pending contract with Maywood-based Fourth Avenue Gospel Building Inc., a nonprofit operation that’s owned and operated by a local congregation of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

Fourth Avenue representatives intended to build a house of worship and a school.

Park district voters in November approved holding an auction to unload the property, which sometimes is called “Area N.” Fourth Avenue Gospel Building was the lone bidder, offering about $1.7 million for the property near Bartlett Road and Route 59.

Last month, people opposed to the plan — including many residents of the nearby Woods of South Barrington development — demonstrated against the deal at park district headquarters. They’ve cited the proposed use of the land and some of the church’s practices among their concerns.

After a public outcry, the South Barrington Park District board on Wednesday will consider scrapping a controversial plan to sell undeveloped land to a religious organization.

A motion to cancel the pending $1.7 million sales contract for a 34-acre site near Bartlett Road and Route 59 is on the agenda for the evening’s board meeting. The would-be buyer is Maywood-based Fourth Avenue Gospel Building Inc., a nonprofit operation that, according to one of its websites, is owned and operated by a local congregation of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

Park District Executive Director Jay Morgan said he doesn’t know if a majority of the five-member board will vote to stop the sale, which has been publicly opposed by dozens of local residents. At least two commissioners wanted the issue on the agenda, he said.

“I think they wanted to put it on there so the residents don’t feel like we’re not listening to what they’re saying,” Morgan said.

Commissioners couldn’t be reached Tuesday.

The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at South Barrington’s Community Center, 3 Tennis Club Lane. It will follow a mostly closed-door meeting set to begin at 6:30 p.m., during which the board will discuss pending litigation stemming from its plan to sell the land.

Attorneys for South Barrington Park District, church tell judge they want to complete land sale

Attorneys for the South Barrington Park District and a church trying to buy 34 acres of park district land said Tuesday they want to move ahead with that deal despite legal action being taken by local residents.

But the lawyer for the residents trying to stop the deal gave no indication during a brief discussion before Cook County Judge Claire J. Quish that his clients are willing to relent.

Rather, plaintiffs’ attorney Mohit Khare requested — and got — more time to amend the complaint and a request for a temporary restraining order that aims to quash the sale. Changes could include dropping the village of South Barrington from the complaint, attorneys indicated.

The Plymouth Bible Baptist Church wants to buy the land, which is south of where Bartlett Road and Route 59 meet and sometimes is called “Area N,” for about $1.7 million.

Church representatives have said they intend to erect a house of worship and a school on the property, which is just north of the Woods of South Barrington neighborhood.

However, during Tuesday morning’s virtual court appearance, attorneys revealed the actual prospective buyer is a Maywood nonprofit called the Fourth Avenue Gospel Building.

Opponents of the South Barrington Park District land sale to Plymouth Brother Christian Church protest outside meeting, confront commissioners

Demonstrators showed up to a South Barrington Park District board meeting Wednesday night, first protesting outside the community center where the meeting was held, then going inside as proceedings started, and lambasted commissioners over a recent attempt to sell a parcel of land to a church.

“Are we going to sit here and let the sale close?” South Barrington resident Steve Janowiak posed to park board commissioners. “No.”

At issue is the sale of Park District-owned land to Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, a faith organization that, according to its website, started in England in the 19th Century and currently has 50,000 members worldwide.

The official purchaser, Fourth Avenue Gospel Building Inc., with an address in Schaumburg, was set to buy the approximately 34 acres of land located at Bartlett Road and Route 59/Sutton Road — also known as “Area N” — for $1.7 million with a closing date of Aug. 29, the day before Wednesday’s meeting.

Residents were irate over the date change, which some said was initially to be in September, calling it a sneaky move by the Park District. They also took issue with other aspects of the sale.

The battle over the potential sale of South Barrington Park District land to the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is headed to court.

A request for a temporary restraining order filed by residents opposing the sale could be heard by Cook County Judge Claire J. Quish on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the district’s attorney, Scott Puma, confirmed Thursday.

The hearing will be held virtually at 10 a.m., Puma said.

The church is set to buy the 34-acre site, which is south of where Bartlett Road and Route 59 meet, for about $1.7 million. It wants to erect a house of worship and a school there.

District leaders postponed a real estate closing scheduled for earlier this week after receiving copies of a legal complaint and a request for a temporary restraining order seeking to block the sale.

The complaint — targeting the church, the park district and the village — was brought forth by anonymous South Barrington residents, documents indicate.

People demonstrated against the deal at the park district’s community center before Wednesday night’s board meeting and then spoke against the plan during the meeting. Many are residents of the Woods of South Barrington neighborhood, which is just south of the property.
