Police release surveillance photos of ruse burglary crew wanted for multiple burglaries in Cary, Algonquin

Surveillance images taken at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday show a silver or gray older model Chevy or GMC SUV just before a residential burglary in the Fox Trails subdivision of Cary.

Police released surveillance photos of the vehicle used by two suspects who have committed numerous ruse burglaries in Cary, Algonquin and Barrington Hills.

The Cary Police Department responded around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday to the 700 block of Bayberry Drive in the Fox Trails subdivision for a call of a residential burglary.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said a pair of offenders convinced the victim they were at the residence to perform tree trimming services the victim never arranged.

One of the suspects distracted the homeowner by having them walk to the backyard to discuss the tree trimming work.

While the homeowner was distracted by the first suspect, a second suspect entered the residence and stole items from the master bedroom, Naydenoff said.

The suspects are believed to be involved in similar incidents in the surrounding area, including one Tuesday evening in Barrington Hills and another on the east side of Algonquin.

Pritzker signs college student-athlete compensation bill into law

College athletes in Illinois will now be able to be compensated.

At the University of Illinois on Tuesday, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed legislation that will allow athletes to profit from endorsements, sponsorships and autographs.

“Beginning July 1, Illinois collegiate student athletes, no matter the sport and no matter the division, can take control of their destiny when it comes to their name, image, likeness and voice,” Pritzker said.

The law does not allow athletes to endorse things like gambling, tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, adult entertainment or any products or services that are “reasonably considered to be inconsistent with the values or mission of a post secondary educational institution.”

With no national standard on the books yet, states are scrambling to allow college endorsements for student athletes. A number of states have such laws set to take effect in coming years, and lawmakers in California are considering moving up the state date of their previously passed legislation.

In 2019, California became the first state to pass NIL – name, image and likeness – legislation, permitting college athletes to hire an agent and market themselves. California’s law was set to take effect in 2023, but Florida just passed a law with an earlier start date, July 1, 2021. Four other states followed suit: Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and New Mexico.

(Sadly) Illinois is the first state to pass a NIL law in the Midwest. University of Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said it gives the state’s college sport’s programs an advantage.

VBHPD reports ruse burglary

The Barrington Hills Police Department is investigating a ruse burglary that occurred this evening in the area of Helm Road and Roundstone Lane. In this incident, one offender distracted the victim with a landscaping quote while another made entry into the home to remove valuables. The offenders were described as two Hispanic males driving an older gray Chevrolet SUV with stickers on the rear window.

The Department is aware of similar activity by the same suspects and vehicle occurring on the east side of Algonquin, which was posted on Nextdoor; however, if you have additional information about these suspects or the vehicle, please contact the Department at 847-551-3006. Residents should be extremely wary of all unexpected visitors, especially those purporting to be contractors or utility workers, and are strongly encouraged to call 911 in such instances, so that an officer can assist in verifying the visitor’s legitimacy.

The ribbon-cutting for the newly refurbished “Joe Kelsch Sr. Dreamway Trail” took place Saturday in Barrington.

The trail, about 1.5 miles round-trip, runs alongside the restored Flint Creek from Langendorf Park to Barrington High School. This portion of Flint Creek now has improved streambed with newly installed native plants and trees and a new path for biking and walking.

The project was a finalist for the Governor’s Cup Award and earned an award from the American Public Works Association this year. It was a collaborative effort between the village, the Barrington Park District, the Barrington Area Unit 220 School District and local conservation nonprofits.

The trail is named after Joe Kelsh Sr., a champion of the Flint Creek Watershed and former school board president for District 220 who died in 2017. More than 25 volunteers gave 1,250 hours to the project, funded by a $516,000 Illinois Environmental Protection Agency grant and local money.

7th Circuit: Insurer Must Defend Horse Farm From Lawsuit Over Golf Cart Accident

An insurer must defend an Illinois equestrian business from a lawsuit filed by a man who was injured when he was run over by a golf cart operated by an employee who was chasing a loose horse, a federal appellate court ruled Monday.

A three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a district court judge’s order granting summary judgment in favor of American Bankers Insurance Co. of Florida. The opinion says the “farmowner policy” issued to St. Charles Farms contained ambiguous language that the owners could have construed as providing commercial general liability coverage.

“The risks undertaken and purchased were ‘[a]ll known exposures’ of the business: stables, boarding, riding clubs and academies, commercial saddle animals, and coverage for instructors liability,” the opinion states. “Without a link to the insured premises at that juncture, it would have been reasonable for SFC to anticipate coverage at an off‐site riding event where an SFC instructor was in charge of observing riders; an accident in this context was an ordinary business risk.”

On Nov. 11, 2016, SFC employee Ashley Ratay transported horses, equipment and a golf cart from the business’ property in St. Charles, Illinois to the Barrington Hills Riding Center, about 15 miles away. Ratay was in charge of supervising the people riding SFC’s horses, which she did while riding the golf cart.

Robert Shockley Jr. was riding as a passenger in the golf cart when Ratay sped across a grassy field to chase a horse. Shockley flew out of the cart when it passed over uneven ground and Ratay ran over his leg.

After Shockley filed a lawsuit seeking compensation from Ratay and SFC for his injuries, American Banker filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois seeking a declaratory judgment that no coverage was owed under its policy.

Driver’s license, ID card expiration dates extended until Jan. 1, 2022

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced Monday that expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended an additional five months, from Aug. 1, 2021, to Jan. 1, 2022.

The new Jan. 1, 2022 extension also includes expiration dates that will occur between July and December of this year. As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until Jan. 1, 2022, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during hot weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

“Extending expiration dates until January 1, 2022, means people with an expired driver’s license or ID card do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” White said in a statement. “During hot weather, I would suggest residents consider delaying visits to Driver Services facilities. But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to continued social distancing efforts, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time. We are allowing more people in the facilities at one time due to relaxed protocols.”

White noted that Senate Bill 2232, which Governor Pritzker signed into law Friday and had passed the House and Senate by overwhelming margins, authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to extend driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to Jan. 1, 2022. Senate Bill 2232 was sponsored by state Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) and state Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg).

White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility due to heavy customer volume. White has greatly expanded online services and encourages the public to visit his office’s website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Many transactions can be conducted online, including the purchase of license plate stickers, obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, and renewing driver’s licenses and ID cards, including Real IDs, for those who are eligible.

Family accuses former District 300 teacher of ‘brainwashing’ daughter to convert to Christian faith

Carpentersville parents Yosuf Chaudhry and Amena Alvi got the shock of their lives when they learned their 15-year-old daughter had renounced her Islamic faith and secretly converted to Christianity.

But how the conversion happened was more worrisome for the Muslim couple, who are accusing a former Jacobs High School history teacher of using his position to proselytize to their daughter and other students through a Christian school club.

After nearly two years of silence, the parents are speaking out about how their family life has been disrupted. The Daily Herald was unable to speak with the couple’s daughter, who, according to her parents, has declined to discuss the matter with the media, and even with them or with counselors.

The couple filed a complaint in federal court last October against Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300, outgoing Superintendent Fred Heid and former Jacobs history teacher Pierre Thorsen. It alleges, among other things, violations of the couple’s rights under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. They accuse the district and Heid of establishing a custom of promoting and advancing Christianity and religion through hiring and retaining Thorsen and allowing him to “promote evangelical Christianity while denigrating other religions for over 20 years.”

The couple say their concern is not their daughter’s conversion itself, but the circumstances that suggest the teenager was being pressured by the teacher about personal religious decisions. They said she previously never had taken an active interest in learning about religion, though she had been allowed the space to develop a personal relationship with God at her own pace in the Islamic tradition. She also hadn’t independently researched other faiths to come to that conclusion, the couple say.

They claim Thorsen, while acting in his capacity as a public school teacher at the Algonquin high school, groomed and indoctrinated their daughter since her freshman year.

Barrington car show rescheduled, party still on

BuickThe Classic Collectors Car Show that was supposed to take place Saturday in downtown Barrington was rescheduled to July 25 due to the weather forecast.

However, the “Party on Park Avenue” will go ahead as planned from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, the Barrington Area of Chamber announced Friday. The event will include live music, adult refreshments and food served by McGonigal’s Pub and Big Iron Horse BBQ.

There will be smooth jazz and pop performed by the Amy & Brook Duo starting at 4 p.m., followed by rock & roll hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s performed by the band No Limits. Admission is free; guests pay for their own food and refreshments, and must be at least 21.

The Classic Collectors Car Show will take place July 25, noon to 4 p.m., in the BMO Harris Bank lot at Cook and East Lake streets. This is the first such show organized by the chamber.
