When we were young raising our family, pinching pennies to pay the mortgage and take care of the children, we’d see news stories about rising violent crime in my hometown of Chicago.

We’d breathe a sigh of relief, thankful that we were no longer in the street gang neighborhoods where murders were commonplace.

Yeah, we paid high property taxes in the suburbs—too high because the Chicago Teachers Union dictated the state’s politics—but at least we thought we were safer.

We thought we’d escaped. That lasted until it didn’t.  Now we’re gone.

And I see Illinois residents running as fast as they can for the exits, not only retirees and geezers like me fleeing to Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

But young people with good incomes—the kind a place can’t afford to lose—are fleeing Illinois as if from the plague.

“We couldn’t have planned it this way,” write Ed Dabrowski and John Klingner of wirepoints.org. “But our seven most-read stories in 2024 each captured a different facet of what’s wrong with Illinois.

“Failing schools. Murders. Closing businesses. A bloated, overpaid government sector. Election interference. Population-loss denial. And Chicago’s twisted equity priorities.”

You hear that gruesome story of the 13-year-old middle-school girl from Deerfield confronted by school officials and ordered to disrobe in front of a male classmate?

It sounds too AWFL to be true.

But it happened, according to her mother Nicole Georgas who said Tuesday she was filing a police complaint with the police in Deerfield on top of a complaint she filed with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The mom alone standing up for her daughter’s privacy was repeatedly mocked and insulted by hostile trans activists as she addressed a crowded District 109 School Board meeting.

The story has gone viral world-wide and was broken by the Lake County Gazette and Dan Proft’s radio show “The Morning Answer.”

To understand this bizzarro world, please understand this:

Even though President Donald Trump has signed an executive order protecting girls’ privacy, and has vowed to cut federal education funding to rogue states, the Illinois Democrats are funded by billionaire Gov. JB Pritzker, who is the bankrupt state’s leading activist for transexuals.

And he’s running for president.

Why is the hard anti-American left so angry at Elon Musk? They’ve been unmasked. He and his warriors at DOGE have found them out.

For years, they’ve been getting paid with your money, a billion dollars a week of American tax dollars, and laughing at you as the United States faces a fiscal deficit and as you’ve pinched your pennies hoping to survive the Democrat Party’s 20 percent inflation, as their leftist allies were living large . That’s why Democrats are so angry. They’ve been discovered. We see the hate and madness in their eyes directed at us for seeing the other side of their facd.

Now they’re screaming like scalded cats in a sack, because Musk and President Donald Trump have cut off their gravy train.

I didn’t approve their spending spree. American taxpayers didn’t vote on the U.S. Agency for International Development spending millions on snacks for terrorist cells of al Qaeda. Or $75 million on diversity scams in foreign nations. What about $17 million for “equity” in Vietnam? Or $8 million to teach Sri Lankan journalists to avoid “binary-gender” language? Or shoveling millions and millions of dollars at left-wing American media organizations without telling subscribers or taxpayers?

And so on.

And $2 million for sex changes in Guatemala and $47,000 to underwrite production of a transgender opera in Columbia? What of $16 million in condoms for the Taliban? Or $30 million to study AIDS among transvestite prostitutes in South Africa?

All this is only a small fraction of federal spending that you pay for. Just wait until Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency move onto other federal departments. Because they’re inviting further detailed line-by-line scrutiny of the federal budget.

Nothing illustrates political madness quite like the Democrats screaming in rage, frothing at the mouth, after the corrupt spending schemes of the two worst presidents in American history–Joe Biden and Barack Obama—were discovered and made public. Joe is a drooling meat puppet now, but are Obama and his schemes under every moist rock? It appears so.

Illinois Taxpayers to Pay Millions in Damages for Pritzker’s “Gender Affirming” Politics

Politicians love to talk and heap cheap glory upon themselves.  But what they don’t say is that voters will have to pay and pay for gruesome policy, like the forced sterilization of minor children through so-called “gender affirming” care.

As other nations turn away from the leftist fetish practice and see America as a desperately sick culture, several U.S. states controlled by left-wing Democrats are pursuing the policy with a vengeance. Included among them are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington.

And Illinois, where Gov. J.B. Pritzker  wants to be president, plans on turning his state into a Josef Mengele theme park.

After Republican President Donald Trump was re-elected in the greatest political comeback in American political history, Pritzker would not be outdone. He used “transgender week” in November to polish his presidential appetites.

“This Transgender Awareness Week, I want you to know that I see you and have your back as governor,” said Pritzker in a press release. “Illinois has enshrined protections for gender-affirming care to meet this moment — and because of that, you will have a home here always.”

Pritzker’s cousin, Jennifer, was born a male but now he identifies as a female, and is an outspoken proponent of transgender treatment. Jennifer (née James) Pritzker was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army National Guard and is a father of three.  With part of the Pritzker hotel fortune, Jennifer Pritzker leads the Chicago-based Tawani Foundation, which awards grants to organizations that support “gender and human sexuality,” according to its website.

Gov.  Pritzker pushed the policy through his Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHR) in December 2021 about non-discrimination protections for “transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming students” under the Illinois Human Rights Act of 1979.

“Ensuring every Illinois student has access to a safe, validating learning environment where they can be their true self is a top priority for my administration,” Pritzker said in a release. “This guidance from the Illinois Department of Human Rights will provide students, caregivers, and educators another tool to ensure classrooms are welcoming, affirming, and inclusive for all students.”

But what he doesn’t say is what we’re all thinking: these are children and by definition they’re incapable of making such irrevocable life decisions. They’re not some middle-aged hotel billionaire who plans on campaigning for president on a platform of abject horror and cruelty.

They’re not a spouse hateful enough to use a young son’s castration against some divorced husband. They’re not some Democrat politician promising sexual utopia without consequence. They’re not a teacher on a power trip who wants to strike a blow against “the patriarchy.” And they’re not leaders of a left-wing school union making a deal with a politician who wants to be president.

They’re just kids, often confused as most kids are.

And they’re just too young, simply helpless against a roomful of lawyers and a judge.

Before we became a sick society dominated by the control freaks of the left, we’d properly treat such people as monsters. Now we smile as they campaign for president?

What’s the rush? European nations are pulling away. Why does the United States allow this monstrosity?

Miranda Devine and The Big Guy

I want you to get yourself a book. It is an important, special book written for those of you who love your country, pay your taxes and play by the rules. It has a great title, written by a fearless reporter, Miranda Devine of the New York Post:

“The Big Guy: How a President and His Son Sold Out America”

It’s all about the cover-up, backed up by hard facts and on-the-record testimony about the liars who abused you, me, our nation, all of us. It has been written cleanly, clearly. So if you care about America, you’ll rush and order this great book now.

And while you’re ordering, how about I tell you a story?

A few years ago after she came out with her first book on Joe Biden’s oily corruption, “Laptop From Hell” (another great read) I was at “the paper.” And sometimes I’d hear the wailing and sighs of agony when I’d tell my editors I planned on writing a column in support of Miranda Devine of The New York Post.

You ever take children to the dentist for a tooth-pull? It sounded like that.

Their sighs, tiny screams and complaints meant I was over the target. No doubt journalistic curiosity had been squeezed out of them by the Shameless 51, the liars of the so-called “Intelligence Community” who’d been wrangled to protect the corrupt China Joe Biden and elect him president over the objections of people with common sense.

The best editors, the most respected, such as John McCormick and Bruce Dold were already gone. And my dear friend Kristen McQueary was either gone or on the way out the door. She, like Devine was a tough reporter who deserved more than she received from the Trib. One thing she’d never do–she’d never whine about a good column coming her way, one that readers would read because it had all the elements of a good story: The use of raw political power and money and sex.

But this new breed of woke editors terrified of angering the rabid left wing (I took to thinking of them as news suppressors) weren’t enthused by Miranda Devine’s great stories.

The once-great paper was repeating a pattern of self-destruction becoming woke, before it went broke.

I was about to go, too, but I didn’t know it yet then.

Miranda Devine was and is the lead columnist at the New York Post, a tabloid that understood a good story. She loves tabloids. She’s unpretentious and curious. She’s a tough, seasoned pro who came from a newspaper family. I knew of her father, the late Frank Devine when he was editor of the Chicago Sun Times.

Refugees of another age

No wonder that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson continues to suffer those crippling panic attacks of his.

Chicago is falling apart. He’s completely out of his depth. He was unequipped for the job and his campaign was all about slogans, Marxist rhetoric from his allies in the Chicago Teachers Union, and race. Now those who can are in a rush to leave. He’s falling apart. His administration is falling apart. And the city is falling apart rapidly.

Forget the fake news “joy” of the Democratic National Convention that oozed out to promote Kamala Harris.  She won’t help the city. And forget the corporate media cheerleaders who’ve tried to paper-over the city’s infected wounds to promote Democrat power. I spent 40 years covering the city’s politics.

Throughout that time the joke was that any time things looked bad, at least we weren’t Detroit. But now that’s an insult to Detroit which is on the ascent. And the people of both cities know it. The city’s self-inflicted wounds are septic now.

Chicago, the city of my birth, the great city of great restaurants and earthy but realistic politics, is now a city that is unaffordable and unsafe. The public schools prepare Chicago schoolchildren only for prison, not success in life. Public transportation is dangerous and filthy and smells like a urinal. Only the poor use it or those who have no other choice. The city government is a billion dollars in debt. And the public schools are a billion in debt. Where’s the money? Johnson has no clue.

And now things will get worse beginning today. Chicago, already plagued by violent crime and will get worse beginning Sunday. That’s because Johnson let the contract for the revolutionary crime-fighting technology called ShotSpotter to lapse without a replacement. Although it alerted police to gunshots, Johnson derided it as “walkie talkie on a stick.” Mayor Johnson campaigned against it, loudly insisting that it led to “over-policing” which is code used by leftist Democrats to refer to arrests of black youths by police. It’s a racial thing with him. And with all those who backed him politically.

Black aldermen, representing black residents who are most often the victims of violent crime, have tried to keep ShotSpotter alive, knowing that it could lead to more arrests of racial minority gang members, but Johnson has promised to veto any plan to save it. And corporate media types tie themselves up in knots trying to explain a simple, but terrible truth:

The mayor of Chicago would rather protect the violent over his citizens. He’d rather embrace repeat gang offenders than the people who need his protection.  As the corrupt corporate media becomes anxious and defensive about Johnson’s self-destructive reasoning, like the clownish leftist fools mocked by Matt Walsh in “Am I a Racist?” a great city is dying.

Now Johnson’s approval rating is an abysmal 27 percent makes him the most unpopular mayor of a Democrat Convention city in decades.

Obama Leaves No Fingerprints Behind

Seconds after Barack Obama’s knife was removed from Joe Biden’s back—the current president having caved to the coup plotter’s demands by stepping down from his re-election campaign–the Obama Left turned on their maudlin fire hose full blast.

They soaked America with overwhelming, treacly sentimentality to lock her in as the Democrat party nominee no one voted for.

It came out of that hose so forcefully that we could hardly breathe. It came out so forcefully that we forgot there was such a thing called democracy. And that it dies in darkness.

The breathless story they told was that Biden was heroic, like George Washington yet even more so, a selfless, magnanimous, epic American patriot who loved his country more than he loved himself.

“Joe Biden’s record of accomplishments is unmatched in modern history,” said his replacement, Vice President Kamala Harris  majestically. “Yes, you may clap.”

Pardon madame?  Yes, we may clap?

It sounds like a command from the cold red queen just before she declares “off with their heads.”

And also, Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, the hateful flesh-eating castrating female hags of ABC’s “The View” and all the others who bit deeply into their crying towels and gushed forth piteously.

They gushed emotion over us like hungry keeners desperate for lunch, or stockmen at the stockyards quickly rushing the sheep, cattle and hogs into the chutes.

But where was Barack Obama, author of the coup to push old Joe Biden off the cliff?

Obama was nowhere, the way he likes it. No Obama fingerprints on the blade in Biden’s back. He was nowhere, man. Obama and Kamala and the herd of weasels who lied to the American people, insisting like the idiot mop-head press lady that Joe Biden was at the top of his game though all close to him knew he was a drooling puddle of goo. And they got away with it for years too.

Funny how it’s easy to lie to the people with prominent corporate media behind the lie, fanning it desperately like a coal to keep their power alive, all the while telling us “Democracy Dies in Darkness” as they gaslighted the country.

February Flashback: “President Non Compos Mentis”

Do you really think the bizarre angry-old-man cane waving performance of President Non Compos Mentis demonstrates his fitness for office?

Because after that politically disastrous news conference in the White House is where we are now.

Biden is no longer mentally fit to be commander-in-chief. He’s an empty husk. I told you he was a meat puppet years ago. Last week, on national television, he proved it.

The world is on the edge of war. China is pushing us in the Pacific, Iran pushes us across the Middle East. Russia is taking Ukraine, despite our war party’s best effort to bring us to the edge of world war. And the president is not in possession of his right mind. He’s slow and senile and the world can see it.

He is President Non Compos Mentis. That is lawyer talk, Latin for “of unsound mind.”

How did this come about? Biden’s Justice Department the other day ruled that the president was not mentally fit to stand trial on the issue of whether he’d illegally and for years taken top secret documents and stored them in broken boxes in his messy garage. He did willfully take the documents. He did in fact put them in broken boxes in his junky garage.

But the special prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland declined to press charges. Why? Biden is unfit to stand trial.

He’s not fit to stand trial, but he’s fit to be president?

NPR: Our Federal Tax Dollars for Marxist News, Partisan Censorship and Pan Flutes?

As a life-long, big city newsman so focused on work that my musical choices involved only news radio jingles, I no longer enjoy listening to news on the radio. Why?

Because it’s mostly biased corporate leftist crap, and I keep fretting about whether Alexander Soros has purchased this local news station or that one and bent its newsroom to his daddy’s will as if they were the once-thriving Cambodian middle class.

Meanwhile cable TV news is so full of snickering liberal rage, and pouty left-wing news presenters with epic hair, that I can’t stand it.

But I’ve come up with a positive alternative:

National People’s Radio.

Que the Pan flutes and the bird sounds from the Amazon rain forest. Yes, the time has come.

And, added plus, “free” public television with programming set up by a corporate board of prominent American conservatives including the scholar Victor Davis Hanson, radio broadcaster Dan Proft, Tom Bevan co-founder of Real Clear Politics and University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Charles Lipson.

For example, we’d have President Joe Biden, accompanied by those Pan Flutes playing the theme of Cmdr. McBragg, telling the story of Joe’s heroic Uncle Ambrose being devoured by cannibals in New Guinea. Whether it happened or not. You can’t make omelets without breaking a few eggs, right Walter Duranty?

And lengthy panel discussions on “It’s the Economy Stupid” about how much things cost at the store, what they cost now and how great things were BJ (Before Joe) and droll comedies from Britain on the humorous antics of liberal chumbolones, and sad dramas from Britain about sad middle-class depressives.

We’ll have sports too, from 24-hour fly fishing to 24-hour soccer that often ends 0-0, and city apartment terriers killing alley rats.

We’ll call that one about the rat-killer “Prince of the City” along with a kid’s cartoon show on the heroic “Prince” protecting a multi-racial family from cartoon rats.

To fund it all, we’ll invoke a complicated hidden federal tax scheme replete with complicated grants and call it just a bunch of “grants” that are all much too intricate for Americans to bother about in Congress. So I hope you’ll never get to the bottom of it and the money keeps flowing in to support my elitist fly-fishing documentaries and scoreless soccer.

Wait a minute. You don’t think Americans should pay for red-blooded rat hunting sports and right-wing comedies on the death of the citizen and fly-fishing stories with corporate “sponsorships” to entertain a tiny fraction of the population?

Zeus the Wonder Dog

The boys desperately wanted a dog.

And finally, when they were in 8th grade, profusely and relentlessly promising daily morning, noon and night that they were old enough, mature and responsible enough to care for a dog, we finally broke down and got them a pup.

Zeus the Wonder Dog.

I’ll always remember him proudly guarding our garden, as you see him in the photo above, head up, chest out, eyes sharp, muscles toned. A strong, beautiful boy ready to chase away his eternal enemies the rabbits, or sleeping on that rug next to my feet in my home office for years when I typed these columns. I’ve never given him a by-line, but he deserved one.

That’s how I remember him, or playing soccer with us. Yes, a dog smart enough to grab his collar tags in his teeth, to prevent him from grabbing that hard red rubber ball with his mouth.

It was amazing to watch. He’d pass to your feet and make a run, waiting for a return pass. He was known by soccer savants for his backheel pass, like the Francesco Totti of dogs.

But right now, I’m thinking of him as a little trembling pup away from his mother for the first time: My sons holding him in their laps on the long drive home from Spring Valley Kennel in Wisconsin.

It was a three-hour drive home. I took the back roads and make it a six-hour drive with Zeus in their laps, bonding with his new boys. Getting used to their scents. Imprinting my boys upon that beautiful pup.

The idea was to get a family pet, a German Shorthair Pointer, a bird dog to walk the fields with us. A well-bred dog for hunting, an all-around dog that could run all day, point pheasants, and retrieve, a dog built for swimming after ducks.

A watchdog and companion. A dog to lay out by the fire.
