Barrington Village President Karen Darch testified before the Chicago City Council Finance Committee Jan. 13 to push for regulations on tank cars in light of a deadly explosion in Quebec last summer and two subsequent explosions that have since occurred in New Brunswick, Canada and Casselton, N.D.

Darch said safety procedures for rail cars carrying hazardous materials like crude oil and ethanol have caught her attention in part because Barrington is traversed by two major rail lines.

Barrington Hills reaches agreement with CN – 2010

Canadian National Railway Co. has agreed to spend money in Barrington Hills, putting cameras at railroad crossings and doing engineering work at a dam at Flint Creek, among other projects.

Limiting government is the only solution – 2010

As a 50-plus year resident of Barrington Hills, I am forced to respectfully disagree with our current Mayor. (April 20 Fence Post) and small businessman. The health care bill is socialistic and probably unconstitutional.

This resident’s Letter to the Editor was in response to President Abboud’s April 2010 letteren titled, “It’s about business, not about socialism, and can be read in its entirety here.

Barrington Hills landowner agrees to remove massive wood piles – 2010

A Barrington Hills landowner and McHenry County struck a deal Wednesday settling at least some issues in an ongoing legal dispute over massive stacks of logs, branches and other wood piled on his property.

The Village of Barrington along with The Regional Answer to Canadian National (TRAC) has filed a petition to make Canadian National (CN) trains safer as they pass through town.

The petition stems from problems found surrounding a CN freight train derailment in Rockford in 2009. The train derailed, spilling ethanol from several tank cars, causing a massive fire that killed one woman and injured several others.

Hoffman Estates officials are saying Canadian National Railway is reneging on part of a 2008 deal to offset effects from its merger with the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad.

Village Attorney Arthur Janura said the conflict stems from CN wanting Hoffman Estates to assume responsibility for maintaining an easement, part of which falls outside the village.

Canadian National Railway Co. has agreed to spend money in Barrington Hills, putting cameras at railroad crossings and doing engineering work at a dam at Flint Creek, among other projects.

Barrington Hills Village President Robert Abboud said Wednesday he doesn’t think the agreement with CN will affect the continuing efforts of Barrington and nearby towns to fight the CN’s purchase of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad, which is bringing increased freight rail traffic through the region.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board announced it will consult an independent third party when reviewing Canadian National Railway Co.’s quarterly environmental reports and monthly operations reports required as part of the company’s purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad tracks.

“We are pleased that the STB acted upon our request and decided to further investigate the serious safety and environmental concerns we are experiencing as the result of CN’s purchase of the EJ&E,” said Barrington Village President Karen Darch.
