Special attention should be paid to the “Administration” segment of the recordings, particularly when it comes to some of President Abboud’s choices for nomination to critical Village boards, commissions and committees during this, his last full Village Board meeting in office.

The National Audubon Society has proclaimed Spring Creek Forest Preserve, located in Barrington Hills, an Important Bird Area (IBA), protecting “globally rare” prairie birds. Twenty-five areas in Illinois have been so named, including three in Cook County and two in DuPage. A panel of experts from around Illinois reviewed the nominations and selected the new IBAs.

More than 100 residents turned out Monday for what may have been their final chance to weigh in on Barrington Hills’ controversial plan to limit property owners’ outdoor lighting. “I feel bullied by you guys telling me I can’t have my lights on,” resident Ralph Sesso told village leaders.

The Barrington Hills Village Board will revisit having a camera installed in its board room to tape proceedings for the village’s website at a meeting later this month. At its next meeting on Oct. 24, the board is expected to mull over further cost estimates for the camera and other equipment needed to make meetings available online. Other local governments, such as those in Barrington and Palatine, already broadcast their meetings online.

A number of very significant Village issues have been discussed and decided upon during the last few months, but, judging from the complete lack of information coming out of Village Hall, you would think that nothing important has been going on in our quiet Village.

When the owners of the Catlow Theater achieved their goal of raising $100,000 for migrating to the digital delivery of movies in just hours short of seven days through their KickStarter web page, they were quoted as saying, “We’re just in shock.” Frankly, we at The Observer were not, since they thoughtfully crafted a clear message to those who might assist them the minute their website went live.
Their narrative began with an explanation of circumstances they were in with the movie industry announcing the pending cessation of 35mm film distribution and the difficulties they were facing in upgrading their equipment. The implications of not migrating, not only for them, but thousands of loyal patrons, were spelled out clearly, and the result was over a thousand “backers” fully funded their campaign because they recognized the necessity to help the Catlow owners out.
The Observer believes that many can learn from this positive scenario whether it is fundraising or proposing amendments to Village codes by our Village leaders by following the same textbook steps the Catlow owners did as follows:
Would a more open, proactive communications path have changed the outcome of Village initiatives such as the lighting ordinance, the electrical aggregation referendum question or the Home Occupation Ordinance amendment on commercial horse boarding? The answer is debatable. But we’ll never know until our Village leaders realize that effective, above-boards communication with residents is the first step in getting our Village back on a true and steady course.
