The Barrington School District 220 Board of Education approved a comprehensive plan at its meeting earlier this months that leaders say will guide the district in its plans to have more inclusivity, community engagement, address overall health and more.
“Framework 220,” as the plan is officially called, was approved on a 7-0 vote by board at the June 6 meeting, with mentions of flexible learning, a future full-day kindergarten program and more community outreach. Additionally, the plan outlines objectives of: Personalized learning, future readiness, inclusive education, health and well-being, community partnerships and communication and stewardship.
“We spent over a year involving the community, stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, staff and community leaders,” said Superintendent Craig Winkelman, who recently started in the role after Robert Hunt resigned.
Winkelman contributed to the plan in his former role as deputy superintendent. He explained that the three-year plan includes 29 objectives.
“There’s also opportunities these won’t just be district objectives,” he said. “There are opportunities for additional community engagement and some objectives we can’t accomplish on our own.”
SD220 is looking into flexible learning at Barrington High School, Winkelman said. His team is working with students interested in joining the inaugural cohort and with staff who are making the commitment to instruct those classes.
Winkelman said school officials will set the direction and structure of the strategic plan’s roll-out, including some of its immediate objectives, during the administrative team’s executive council retreat this summer.
