Skip Gianopulous is running unopposed in the April 5 election for a two-year term seat on the Barrington Hills Village Board, now that Dawn Davis has decided not to run.

Davis withdrew her candidacy Jan. 24, three days before the deadline,  according to the village clerk’s office.

Dawn Davis, a candidate for the open two-year trustee seat on the Barrington Hills village board, has withdrawn from the race, according to the village clerk’s office.

Her withdrawal leaves Harold “Skip” Gianopulos uncontested for the two-year seat.

Barrington Hills’ long-controversial outdoor lighting ordinance could be up for its final vote on Monday, but even its most ardent opponents are at peace.

“There is a sense of calmness,” said Dede Wamberg, who previously led the group Homeowners Against Lighting Ordinances (HALO) and is now one of the candidates for village trustee for the homegrown Common Sense Party.

The Barrington Hills Village Board, embroiled in controversy over the so-called dark-sky proposal and other issues, will have new faces after the April 5 election since two incumbents are not seeking re-election.

Walter E. Smithe and Steve Knoop are bowing out. Beth Mallen is running again, as is Joseph Messer, who was appointed to the board by Village President Robert Abboud after trustee Peter Wessel died about six months after being elected in 2009. Village Clerk Karen Selman also filed for re-election.

Though candidates still have five days to file, the sleepy community of Barrington Hills already is emerging as home to one of the area’s more hotly contested races.

Largely driving the escalated political interest at least seven residents are expected to run for four trustee positions is the controversial ordinance proposing to limit outdoor lighting.

Saying they’re troubled by the recent actions of their village government, four Barrington Hills residents announced their candidacy Thursday for village board seats in next year’s municipal election.

Running under the banner of the newly formed Common Sense Party, the slate includes current Trustee Beth Mallen, lawyer Stephen D’Amore, financier Skip Gianopulos and former Barrington Unit District 220 school board member Dede Wamberg.

The new Common Sense Party that announced four candidates for the Barrington Hills Village Board didn’t sprout overnight, but evolved as more and more residents expressed dismay over proposals to dim lights and cater to equestrians, members said.

The slate, selected after a nominating committee of the group vetted as many as 40 possible candidates, talked this week about problems with the current administration’s priorities, what they see as government intrusion into private lives and unwanted change to the village of five-acre lots and 4,000 people.

Dede Wamberg, the most vocal critic of a controversial proposal to dim lights in Barrington Hills, and three others, including a current village trustee, announced Thursday that they are candidates for Village Board under a new political banner, the Common Sense Party.

Trustee Beth Mallen will join Wamberg and Skip Gianopulos and Stephen D’Amore on the spring ballot. Four seats on the board are up for re-election. Besides Mallen’s, they are those of Steve Knoop, Joseph Messer and Walter E. Smithe.

A new political group called the Common Sense Party has formed in Barrington Hills and will announce on Thursday at the home of an ardent “Dark Sky” opponent a slate of candidates for the Village Board in the spring election.

Dede Wamberg, who opposes the plan to dim lights in the village to better see the night sky, and others declined to say much about the new party or who the candidates will be.
