“The fifth day of March of each year shall be designated as the Day of the Horse, to be observed throughout the State as a day to encourage citizens to honor and celebrate the role of equines in the history and character of Illinois, and to recognize the benefits of the equine industry to the economy, agriculture, tourism, and quality of life in Illinois.”

If Illinois wants to honor the horse it should stop shipping horses from IL to Mexico to be brutally and inhumanely slaughtered. They go to holding pens in other states and then to slaughter in other countries. I challenge legislators and IL residents to just once search the web for horse slaughter and view the process and conditions. You will see no honor there. Plants should be reopened in IL so animals do not have to travel in semis for 40 hours or more in cramped terrible conditions. Horses could travel one hour down the road if local slaughter houses were reopened, but currently we send our wonderful animals other countries so we IL residents can pretend it doesn’t happen… and we say we ‘honor’ the horse?
