Fair autumn weather and variety of food, drink and entertainment offerings resulted in hundreds of residents attending the first “The Hills are Alive Heritage Fest 2013” held earlier today at the Barrington Hills Park District. The Observer was on hand to capture a few photos of the event:

Thank you Pres. McLaughlin, Trustee Konicek, and all who organized and volunteered to give us such a wonderful Sunday afternoon. It was great to see families and familiar faces, talking, becoming familiar with community organizations and equestrian activities. It demonstrated that we can co-exist peacefully, respectfully, and actually enjoy one another. Thank you Marty for your leadership and friendship.
P.S. Loved the band
Fantastic event! My family really enjoyed it!
Thanks to the organizers of “Hills are Alive.” Lived in Barrington Hills quite some time and haven’t before felt as welcome in the broad community. Didn’t know the location was actually Barrington Hills park district and had always thought the property was exclusive domain of the Riding Club.
It’s a positive sign for the future if the community can be more inclusive. We’ve felt that leadership in Barrington Hills wanted the community “dark” for more reasons than just less lights.
Had a chance to meet Mr. McLaughlin and observed him walking around and talking to people and smiling. That sure was refreshing. Yesterday was a wonderful day for Barrington Hills and needed hope for the future!
What a spectacular afternoon! I second the comments of “hope” and “anonymous4now” I had no idea how lovely the grounds of the Riding Center were and we were so happy to finally feel a part of a warm community again.
The crowds were huge, the food was fantastic and the kids had SO much fun. We can’t wait to see what new events are added to next year’s fest.
Thanks a million President McLaughlin! I do believe this was a huge step towards your campaign goal to Unite Barrington Hills.
Congratulations Pres. McLaughlin for spearheading the “Hills are Alive” festival reminding all of us why Barrington Hills is special. You remained committed to this event in the face of Board criticism and overt objection by a few malcontents all the while keeping your promise this event would be revenue neutral to taxpayers.
Also, special recognition should go to Trustee, Michael Harrington who worked during the event and stayed afterward to help clean-up. Thanks Trustee Harrington for leading by example helping to make the “Hills are Alive” festival a success. For me personally, I enjoyed the “Rooster” and “Hen” beauty contest, the pulled pork with barbeque and the music.
I hope the “Hills are Alive” becomes an annual event and more community wide orientated events are planned at our Riding Center. For those of you who like to walk, the trails at the Riding Center and beyond are quite scenic. The Riding Club is a park district facility open to anyone who chooses to enjoy it.
In the end, nothing compared to the many residents who came to the festival simply to have a good time sharing positive thoughts and laughter with each other on a beautiful fall day.
Also, a special thanks to Barrington Pack 187 Cub Scouts who showed up in uniform in strong numbers to “man the fire” and “pick-up debris” knowing that, “you should always leave a place better than you find it.”
I know all the cub scouts had a great time eating hot dogs, getting their faces painted, running around in the field, riding the ponies, playing grass tennis and riding the hayride.
Good work scouts!
