The Society of Surgical Oncology awarded Kim Duchossois its 43rd annual James Ewing Layman’s Award at a ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, Saturday.

The group honored the Barrington Hills woman and daughter of Arlington Park Chairman Dick Duchossois for her efforts to improve the quality of care for cancer patients. Past winners include the likes of columnist Ann Landers, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, golfer Arnold Palmer and even Kim’s father in 2000.

The Barrington Hills man who erected a fence that blocks access to his neighbor’s home said he’s offered to help pay for a new driveway at a different spot as a means of settlement.

“All I want to do is use my land within the rules of the village,” Rick Hardy said.

Joseph Evans has driven down the same road to get to his Barrington Hills home for years, a road he said had been there for 88 years, and which he paid to improve a few years ago. No more.

Earlier this month, his neighbor put a fence across the road. Last week, his neighbor started digging up the road, which Evans said leaves him with no viable way to drive to his house.

Barrington Hills trustee candidates are divided over whether allowing exemptions along its borders to the village’s traditional 5-acre minimum zoning will protect the town’s interior.

The debate comes after Barrington Hills lost a series of disconnection lawsuits in recent years to developers wanting to build homes on smaller lots. All the candidates agree current law favors developers of large parcels in such fights.

A series of campaign events called Citizens Solutions Summits begin Thursday for some candidates for the Barrington Hills Village Board.

A slate including Trustee Beth Mallen and newcomers Steve D’Amore, Dede Wamberg and Skip Gianopulous have set the Thursday event for 7 to 9 p.m. at Chessie’s 111 Grill in Barrington and scheduled four other summits.

A Barrington Hills-based horse-rescue service typically receives requests for help about every 10 days, but rarely must it save 11 animals all at once.

That’s what happened Wednesday afternoon when 11 horses from a bankrupt farm in Crete arrived at the Hooved Animal Rescue & Protection Society

Philip Maksymonko knows he is not like most of his neighbors. And he really doesn’t care.

Maksymonko has been the subject of two legal disputes over debris and dogs on his property in recent months involving his neighbors, the Village Of Barrington Hills and McHenry County.

Barrington Unit District 220 officials Tuesday night reached their goal to identify just over $2 million in potential budget cuts by March 15.

The cuts include a loss of 4.3 full-time certified positions, 10.3 full-time support staff and 54.5 stipends to oversee various after school programs.

Barrington Unit District 220 board members Tuesday approved a three-year contract with the district’s 450 support staff members.

For the current school year, union members will not receive a salary increase, although each person will get a one-time, 2-percent payment ($470 per full-time employee, on average) to help offset employee costs for new health insurance.
