Summer Concerts at the Arb make a triumphant return

The 2025 Wickstrom Lincoln Concert Series is once again coming to the Arboretum of South Barrington this summer at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday running all the way through Aug. 13.

These concerts would not be able to happen without the generosity of Heidner Properties and Rick Heidner himself. Charitable sponsors include Wickstrom Auto Group and the Rob Morrison Team at Coldwell Banker. Additional sponsors include Ricky Rockets Fuel Centers, Goldrush Gaming and the village of South Barrington.

This summer’s Wickstrom Lincoln Concert Series has something for every type of music lover as some of the most popular bands from the area will be coming to the Arb. With fan favorite bands like 7th heaven and tributes bands such as Eagles tribute One of These Nights. Food will be available as concertgoers can enjoy takeout from restaurants at the Arb or Sip n Shop at Tangled Roots Craft Brew & Kitchen, The Hampton Social or Star Cinema Grill. Volunteers have generously donated their time to help staff and put on the best show possible. One of these volunteer groups is Shelter Inc., leaders in Chicagoland for providing emotional and physical care to help at-risk children, a cause near and dear to the Heidner family. Along with Shelter Inc., animal support organizations Helping Paws and Soul Harbor Ranch will make appearances to bring even more smiles to these concerts.

Mother-son duo from Barrington building bonds on ‘Lego Masters’

Luke Horwath was 5 when he got his first Lego set.

He sat with his mother, Anne, at their kitchen table, bonding as they created a car and a helicopter. He’s been building ever since.

The Barrington mother and son are competitors in season five of “Lego Masters,” a national competition television series hosted by Will Arnett. While filming has wrapped, viewers know that so far the Horwaths are still in the running.

On the show, teams of two Lego enthusiasts take part in challenges, building massive complex creations and crafting captivating stories to win $100,000 and the “Lego Masters” title. New episodes air Mondays at 7 p.m. on FOX.

“The Super Bowl for football is the biggest event of the year for the sport, and ‘Lego Masters’ is the biggest event of the year for the Lego community,” Luke said. “This is absolutely a dream come true.”

Facing off against some of the best builders in the world, Anne and Luke’s skills were put to the test.

“We each bring something unique to the table and therefore make a great pairing,” Luke said. “I bring the motion and mechanisms, and my mom brings the creativity and the design flair.”

The award-winning Elgin Symphony Orchestra continues to bring live music experiences to Elgin and surrounding communities this summer through free outdoor concerts in Elgin, Barrington, and Hoffman Estates.

“We are excited to bring the incredible talent of our ESO musicians to community parks throughout the summer,” said Marc Thayer, Chief Executive Officer of the ESO. “We’re always excited to share our enthusiasm for great music with others and these outdoor summer venues offer the perfect opportunity to engage with our community.”

This summer, residents can enjoy free ESO performances:

  • Thursday, June 19: The ESO Brass Quintet will perform, along with local Gospel church choirs, at the Gail Borden Public Library’s Juneteenth Celebration at 6 p.m. on the main library’s outdoor stage. Blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic dinners are welcomed.
  • Thursday, June 26: Join the Elgin Symphony Brass Quintet at Lords Park for an evening of music under the summer sky! Presented as part of the City of Elgin’s Concerts in the Park series, this outdoor performance at 7 p.m. offers a lively and engaging mix of brass music — perfect for a fun and relaxing night out.
  • Wednesday, July 2: Celebrate the holiday at the ESO’s free Patriotic Brass & Percussion concert at 6:30 p.m. Bring a picnic and lawn chairs to enjoy this family-friendly event at the Robert G. Soule Amphitheater at Citizens Park in Barrington. This concert is made possible through the generous support of the Barrington Area Community Foundation.
  • Thursday, Aug. 7: Experience an evening with the ESO String Quartet at 7 p.m. at the Village Green Amphitheater in Hoffman Estates. Coolers, food, drinks, chairs, blankets, and small tables are allowed at this outdoor venue. Seating is first come, first serve.

The ESO begins its 76th subscription season in October. The six-concert series includes Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, and the Fauré Requiem, and showcases several celebrated guest artists.
