These days, it’s not so unusual to see therapy dogs roam hospital hallways or visiting nursing home rooms.

What may be a little more unusual is seeing sneaker-wearing miniature horses waiting their turn to offer up a little nuzzle.

The SOUL Harbour Ranch Therapy Program in Barrington brings miniature horses — as well as its trained dogs — to spread a little love to the elderly, people who are sick or those who just need a little comfort.

Jodie Diegel and her husband, Jerry, owners of SOUL Harbour Ranch, have grown the program to 50 volunteers with various therapy animals. Their hope is to continue to expand their offerings to keep spreading the joy these loving animals bring.

Jodie discusses the programs they offer and how you can join their team or offer other assistance.

Q: What is the SOUL Harbour Ranch Animal Therapy Program? Give a brief overview of what the organization does.

A: The SOUL Harbour Ranch Animal Therapy Program is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 located in Barrington, home to founder and president Jodie Diegel and her husband, Jerry.

To make sure their littlest patients and families get the care they deserve, staff at JourneyCare are creating a virtual twist on their annual Duck Race in Barrington.

The nonprofit hospice and palliative care agency typically hosts its annual Duck Race at the Barrington Park District Aqualusion Pool to raise funds for its All About Kids Pediatric program, which serves children living with serious illness and their families in Barrington and the entire Chicago region.

This year, JourneyCare is working to keep everyone safe from COVID-19 and live streaming the event from the home of a JourneyCare donor, where Duck Race participants can watch online to see their sponsored rubber ducks race to the finish line for prizes.

To learn more, visit journeycare.org/duck.

Sponsored rubber ducks race six heats down the water slide, with winning ducks’ sponsors earning prizes like tickets to the Chicago Botanic Gardens and improv theater. In 2019, race supporters raised $21,000 to support the All About Kids program that provides home hospice and palliative care to children.

The plastic ducks will once again be racing down a water slide for the 27th JourneyCare Duck Race at 4 PM Saturday. Aug. 29. Adopt a duck for $5, six for $25, or 25 for $100.

Those who sponsor a duck will then receive details on how to live stream the Duck Race this weekend.

About 70 volunteers in the Chicago area have joinedSavvy at Sewing,” an effort to create homemade masks for JourneyCare, a hospice and palliative care organization serving patients in 13 Illinois counties, to help protect against COVID-19.

Volunteers include “Project Runway” alum Peach Carr and a group called the Sew and Sews from Sun City in Huntley, which traded its usual quilt making to aid the effort.

JourneyCare officials stressed the homemade masks will be worn over medical-grade masks to protect them from wear and tear and extend the life of the equipment.

In honor of the VIP pediatric patients, JourneyCare staff, community members, supporters, patients and their families will gather for a splash-tacular time.

This free family event includes open swim and splash pad, games, activities, entertainment by Bob the DJ, 50/50 drawing, six duck races and 36 prizes. Guests can adopt (purchase) ducks and cheer them on as they race down the waterslide to the finish line!

In 2018 this annual event raised $21,000, and this year the JourneyCare Foundation hopes to raise $25,000 to ensure that JourneyCare keeps its promise never to turn away anyone because of the inability to pay.
