The Barrington Area Community Foundation has awarded $173,000 in grants to more than 20 organizations, all of which seek to improve the lives of those in and around Barrington.

Spring 2007 HarpstringsBarrington’s Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society received $12,500 to go towards the recently donated 100 acres of land in Barrington Hills that Donna Ewing, president and founder of HARPS, said she wants to use for a rescue and education center.

“We’re trying to get back to our roots,” said Ewing, who founded HARPS in 1971.

The Barrington Area Community Foundation recently announced that $175,000 will be granted in 2015 to organizations that provide unmet needs in the area.

Dozens of local nonprofits apply for a portion of the grant money, which is awarded to select Barrington organizations in April.

Barrington-based Hoofed Animal Rescue and Protection Society is applying for a BACF grant to help fund the construction of a 20-stall horse barn, an indoor arena and a veterinary clinic on 100 acres in Barrington Hills.

“We’ve been donated the use of 100 acres of a 500-acre property in Barrington Hills,” HARPS Program Director Jason Bitton said. “Hopefully, we’re going to have it completed next year.”
