Did you read Barron’s recently? Their headline ”Best and Worst Run States”: “As more states begin to get their finances in order, the outlook is brightening for municipal-bond investors. Hope for Wisconsin, Indiana and New York. Not so for California and Illinois.”

Our governor believes his new Internet tax on retailers will save “main street” jobs. Did you know that taxes drive jobs away? Duh! The Performance Marketing Association points out that Amazon’s affiliates in Illinois will cause this state to lose 25 percent to 35 percent of the revenue currently collected from them as they lose business, cut jobs and/or move out of state. It seems to me that if we were a business friendly state and attracted new business, our revenues would go up. Illinois’ taxes on business, Internet and individuals have caused lots of people to get out of Illinois, so our leader, Mr. Quinn, can collect rocks not money.

I live on the boundary of Barrington Hills and would be one of the people immediately affected by any policy of “feathering,” where a buffer zone of smaller properties is set up between 5-acre properties and high density housing. This sounds OK in principle, but let me tell you about the realities.

We have resided in Barrington Hills since 1977. The equestrian community has been very important to us and was one of the main reasons we moved to Barrington Hills. We have accommodated the equestrian community by agreeing to keep open a riding path on our western property line when we purchased the property in 1975; and we had horses on our 10 acres even before we moved into our home.

We are very concerned about recent proposals which would affect our community such as the lighting ordinance, which has now created two classes of residents; the loss of hundreds of acres of prime land and the commercial boarding ordinance supported by the village president and his “Save 5 Acres” candidates.

As a Barrington Hills resident who has been an active participant in numerous village issues and community efforts during the last 10 years, I am deeply concerned about the outcome of the upcoming election for village board of trustees. The dynamics among the current members have become pernicious, and, sadly, contentiousness has become the norm.

In order for our government to function effectively again, there needs to be a serious change in leadership. After carefully studying all of the contenders in this race, I am supporting the Common Sense Party candidates.

Earnest Benn wrote, “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.”

Barrington Hills President Bob Abboud is clearly a disciple of this practice of political process based on the long and exhaustive village debate that recently concluded his pursuit of an unnecessary Exterior Lighting Ordinance. Despite his closed-minded determination to quash overwhelming opposition to the ordinance, the voice of the people managed to prevail in the end (notwithstanding anonymous pink support mailers).

An e-mail has been circulating the village concerning civility during the campaign for the village board, containing a Civility Covenant that all of the candidates were asked to sign. The covenant was adapted from Jim Wallis’ “Seven Steps to Civility in the Upcoming Election.”

April 5 is an important election in Barrington Hills. Several past elections were rife with negativism and exaggerations; things haven’t changed much. Again some elected trustees are among the agitators. Trustees have a fiduciary duty to correct spoken and written misrepresentations about how our government functions; that is not happening.

In response to Jim Hammond’s letter (July 26), I’d just like to say that some people have no sense of irony. And some people are “spin doctors.”

When Mr. Hammond quotes (accurately, but quite incompletely) my 2005 presentation to The Riding Club of Barrington Hills, I hope he’s just one of the folks with “no sense of irony.”
