A child was uninjured after she was riding a bicycle crossing the street from the sidewalk when she was struck by a police squad car in Barrington Monday afternoon.
The Barrington Police Department and Barrington Fire Department responded around 3:20 p.m. Monday to the area of Hough Street and Russell Street for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said a teenage Barrington girl, approximately 15 years old, was riding her bicycle.
The child was riding the bicycle northbound on the sidewalk along the west side of South Hough Street.
A Barrington Hills Police Department squad car, driven by a male officer in his mid-50s, was stopped at the stop sign eastbound on Russell Street at the intersection of Hough Street, Daigle said.
He was waiting to turn right onto southbound Hough Street.
Another motorist, who did not have a stop sign, stopped on Hough Street to allow the Barrington Hills police car to enter southbound traffic, Daigle said.
The squad car began to turn when the bicyclist left the sidewalk, attempting to cross the street in front of the squad.
Daigle said the front of the squad car struck the left side of the bicyclist.

What would citations be issued for?? The fact that a motorist stopped in the middle of the road backing traffic up? The fact that the Cop wasn’t paying attention and didn’t see a pedestrian / Cyclist enter the roadway, supposedly not giving way to her like the law says, or the fact that the teen cyclist, didn’t follow the rules of the road and didn’t stop at the corner to make sure traffic was clear so she could enter without being hit. It’s very basic “RULES OF THE ROAD” It’s in the handbooks or online and all 3 parties are guilty of not following the rules of the road.
Thank goodness the child was OK but I have little doubt the officer driving that big SUV had to go to the ER because of union rules.
I’m sure it’s a standard for this because I believe they not only get examined for physical things but he probably had to do a urine and or blood test to make sure he wasn’t under the Influence of drugs or alcohol that would put him as responsible.
