Horizon Farms, the nearly 400-acre former equestrian estate in Barrington Hills, was opened to the public by the Forest Preserves of Cook County this month, although some of the property’s features remain off-limits.
Dave Kircher, a chief landscape architect for the forest preserve, said about 4 miles of multi-use trails are open to hikers, bicyclists and horse riders, while plans continue for the rest of property’s unique features.

May 23, 2011 Village of Barrington Hills Board of Trustees Minutes:
President Abboud introduced Nancy Schumm from Schumm Consulting to make a presentation to the Board, regarding property acquisition by the Cook County and Kane County Forest Preserves, and the McHenry County Conservation District.
These three units of government have money and are intent on making land acquisitions covering thousands of acres. She believed there are several opportunities for acquisition that would be consistent with the Village’s Comprehensive Plan. She also believed it is important that we actively engage these units of government in order that we coordinate activities and provide them with our perspective.
Ms. Schumm explained her professional skills and network connections with many organizations and presented her resume. She presently does work with other Barrington Area communities and organizations and is well recognized by BACOG. President Abboud asked the Board for consulting assistance in the range of $1100/month for this effort.
Trustee Messer motioned the Village create a contract to be finalized at the June meeting. Trustee Meroni seconded. All present said Aye. Trustee Gohl asked Nancy Schumm to write an article for the next newsletter regarding her expertise.
Just as an ex-Village President can take credit for encouraging the gateway from McHenry and Kane Counties to Chicago via the Longmeadow Parkway through Barrington Hills, he can also take credit for courting Toni Preckwinkle and opening the pristine pastures of Barrington Hills to all in Chicagoland. Perhaps a statue of him in front of Village Hall, with hands outstretched, would be appropriate, the inscription reading “Give me your tired drivers, your poor equestrians, your huddled masses yearning to recreate and breathe free…”
Just a few questions to BHObserver:
What is the possibility that this public land and facilities become a livery operation?
The article mentions “trails”. Will they connect to BH residential & private trails?
What became of Ms. Schumm who demanded a pretty nice monthly sum?
Is this another case of sweeping up droppings left by the former VBH President?
Possibility????? A foregone conclusion…
