Seven Teams Compete in the Area IV IEL Team Challenge at FRVPC H.T.

Despite terribly wet conditions over the weekend – pouring rain for dressage and cross-country – the Fox River Valley Pony Club Horse Trials (FRVPC H.T.) of Area IV hosted a successful USEA Interscholastic Eventing League (IEL) Team Challenge on June 24-27, 2021. Seven IEL teams, including three scramble teams, and 27 riders competed for top honors at the beautiful Barrington Hills Riding Center in Barrington Hills, Illinois.

The scramble team of “No Gelding No Glory” won by eight points with a score of 101.4. L’Esprit Equestrian Green took second, followed by Lake Geneva Equestrian taking third, L’Esprit Equestrian Purple taking fourth, and Team V Eventing rounding out the top five teams.

Congratulations to all these courageous IEL riders and their horses for toughing it out through the rain and mud!

Police release surveillance photos of ruse burglary crew wanted for multiple burglaries in Cary, Algonquin

Surveillance images taken at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday show a silver or gray older model Chevy or GMC SUV just before a residential burglary in the Fox Trails subdivision of Cary.

Police released surveillance photos of the vehicle used by two suspects who have committed numerous ruse burglaries in Cary, Algonquin and Barrington Hills.

The Cary Police Department responded around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday to the 700 block of Bayberry Drive in the Fox Trails subdivision for a call of a residential burglary.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said a pair of offenders convinced the victim they were at the residence to perform tree trimming services the victim never arranged.

One of the suspects distracted the homeowner by having them walk to the backyard to discuss the tree trimming work.

While the homeowner was distracted by the first suspect, a second suspect entered the residence and stole items from the master bedroom, Naydenoff said.

The suspects are believed to be involved in similar incidents in the surrounding area, including one Tuesday evening in Barrington Hills and another on the east side of Algonquin.

The Barrington Hills Police Department is investigating a ruse burglary that occurred this evening in the area of Helm Road and Roundstone Lane. In this incident, one offender distracted the victim with a landscaping quote while another made entry into the home to remove valuables. The offenders were described as two Hispanic males driving an older gray Chevrolet SUV with stickers on the rear window.

The Department is aware of similar activity by the same suspects and vehicle occurring on the east side of Algonquin, which was posted on Nextdoor; however, if you have additional information about these suspects or the vehicle, please contact the Department at 847-551-3006. Residents should be extremely wary of all unexpected visitors, especially those purporting to be contractors or utility workers, and are strongly encouraged to call 911 in such instances, so that an officer can assist in verifying the visitor’s legitimacy.

7th Circuit: Insurer Must Defend Horse Farm From Lawsuit Over Golf Cart Accident

An insurer must defend an Illinois equestrian business from a lawsuit filed by a man who was injured when he was run over by a golf cart operated by an employee who was chasing a loose horse, a federal appellate court ruled Monday.

A three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a district court judge’s order granting summary judgment in favor of American Bankers Insurance Co. of Florida. The opinion says the “farmowner policy” issued to St. Charles Farms contained ambiguous language that the owners could have construed as providing commercial general liability coverage.

“The risks undertaken and purchased were ‘[a]ll known exposures’ of the business: stables, boarding, riding clubs and academies, commercial saddle animals, and coverage for instructors liability,” the opinion states. “Without a link to the insured premises at that juncture, it would have been reasonable for SFC to anticipate coverage at an off‐site riding event where an SFC instructor was in charge of observing riders; an accident in this context was an ordinary business risk.”

On Nov. 11, 2016, SFC employee Ashley Ratay transported horses, equipment and a golf cart from the business’ property in St. Charles, Illinois to the Barrington Hills Riding Center, about 15 miles away. Ratay was in charge of supervising the people riding SFC’s horses, which she did while riding the golf cart.

Robert Shockley Jr. was riding as a passenger in the golf cart when Ratay sped across a grassy field to chase a horse. Shockley flew out of the cart when it passed over uneven ground and Ratay ran over his leg.

After Shockley filed a lawsuit seeking compensation from Ratay and SFC for his injuries, American Banker filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois seeking a declaratory judgment that no coverage was owed under its policy.

Illinois drivers on July 1 will face automated computer checks for liability insurance twice a year. Failing to get insurance after the state sends a warning letter could end in a $100 fine.

As many as 1.5 million uninsured Illinois drivers will have something new to worry about starting July 1: computers, twice a year, will try to catch them.

On July 1, the Illinois Secretary of State will begin using a vendor to check the insurance status of all drivers in Illinois in an effort to reduce the number of uninsured drivers. The computer checks will be twice a year and most drivers won’t even know about them, unless the computer can’t find a driver’s insurance info.

Then a warning letter is generated stating their license plates are being suspended.

After the warning letter, uninsured drivers will be required to obtain insurance and a $100 fine will be imposed to reinstate the plates.

If the state sends the warning letter and a driver does have insurance, the driver must contact their insurance agent, provide them the reference number from the warning notice and the agent must then resolve the matter with the state.

Illinois has about 8.5 million drivers, and estimates between 1.2 million and 1.5 million don’t have the required liability insurance. The Illinois Secretary of State estimates the random checks can reduce that by several hundred thousand.

Dear Equestrian Patron,

Your current annual equestrian rider’s license (membership card) and equestrian tag are scheduled to expire on June 30, 2021. Membership cards must be with the rider and tags must be worn on the horse at all times
while riding on FPCC trails.

2021-2022 Equestrian License and tag will be available for purchase starting May 24, 2021. Upon completion of the purchase, both the membership card(s) and horse tag(s) will be mailed to the address provided. Please allow 1-2 weeks’ processing time for FPCC staff to mail your membership card and/or tag(s).

  • USPS Mail: General Headquarters at 536 N Harlem Avenue in River Forest, IL 60305
  • Office: The permits counter at the Forest Preserves General Headquarters is open on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 am – 3 pm. An appointment is required and can be booked online.
