Voters on Nov. 6 will be asked whether they want to create a county executive form of government for McHenry County.

While the executive is popularly elected, unlike the current system where the County Board’s 24 members elect a chairman after every November election, the executive position comes with a lot more authority than the chairmanship and would change the power structure of county government.

Dee Beaubien believes she has no choice but to run as an independent in the 52nd House District race after David McSweeney’s win in the GOP primary last month.

In McSweeney, she said, people won’t have a representative who stands up for both fiscal conservatism and human rights the way her late husband, former state Rep. Mark Beaubien, did.

At a board meeting Thursday that went until midnight, the Village Board seemed baffled by this week’s ‘no’ vote for electrical aggregation.

Barrington Hills was one of just a handful of communities in the state that voted down the option of using an alternative electricity supplier that could have saved residents 40 percent to 45 percent on their energy bills, according to village estimates.

Bartlett and Barrington Hills were the only holdouts in Cook County’s Northwest suburbs on a referendum allowing municipal leaders to negotiate with companies other than ComEd for their electricity supply.

Bartlett voters were decisively against the proposal, with 61 percent voting down the measure. The question was closer in Barrington Hills, where 468 voters opposed the proposal and 443 backed it.

You don’t need The Observer to tell you that next Tuesday is an election day.  Campaign signs line our roadways, robocalls cause us to pause before picking up the phone and every commercial break on television seems to include relentless campaign ads.

Last month, The Observer published “go-to” links for residents where they can view their voting districts, polling locations and preview sample ballots for more time to consider candidate choices.  Today we’re providing these links again, and you can click on your county below to find your personal voting information:

Tuesday Village residents will be asked whether our Barrington Hills leaders should negotiate electric rates on our behalf, and The Observer published our findings last week (see “What residents should know about electrical aggregation”).  Those voting on Tuesday will also consider selecting three Village residents running for county, state and US government seats.  Leslie Coolidge (D) is running for the 6th district seat in the US Congress, Dr. Ann Majewski (R) is running for McHenry County Coroner and David McSweeney (R) hopes to represent the 52nd District in the Illinois House of Representatives.

The Observer makes no endorsements in these races, but wishes our fellow residents good fortune at the polls.  The polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, and the results of the electrical aggregation referendum will be published as soon as they are final.

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich mixed words of encouragement with his political message in an assembly at Barrington High School Thursday.

Gingrich became the third presidential candidate to visit Barrington High School in its history. With his statewide headquarters at 1000 Hart Road, around the corner from the high school, supporters turned out Thursday in force. And following John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama, Gingrich on Thursday combined national politics with advice to students as he addressed the auditorium of about 350 mostly social studies students and about 350 local residents.
