Dear Observer,
I wanted to follow up on the continuing saga of the fall of our beloved D220 schools. As a taxpayer, I am disgusted by the lack of leadership Superintendent Brian Harris and our board have had in performing their basic duties during this pandemic. They have failed to provide our children with in person teaching opportunities. Elearning has failed our children to give them even a basic education in reading and math.
I am further angered when I learned Harris’ child is in person for school and when board member Leah Collister Lazzari, who has been strongly opposed to schools opening, has her own son somehow get to attend Barrington High School in person while the rest of the pions are stuck dealing with children who are completely stressed and depressed with the frustrations of elearning and staying home days on end learning so little.
Our schools‘ ratings are plummeting all while the board has voted to increase our taxes again! Surrounding districts are increasing in ratings and have been in session most of the school year. We have had only three half days! The busses you see in town are empty. Yes, we are paying for empty busses to drive around.
We the citizens and taxpayers need to rise up and fight the board members who won’t allow our kids in school and fire Harris #FireHarris. I urge our citizens to contact the board members and have them NOT vote to increase our taxes. Urge them to resign so we can get people in who will get our kids back to school and get our D220 ratings back up to par!
It would be great to follow up on this story and see if local children’s GPAs were affected – GPA’s are on their permanent school record . I know for sure my daughter who was a BHS freshman when covid started struggled for the first time in her academic history due to the home schooling. She’s now making up for it with AP courses I know other children are not able to take on such challenges . I was told I was not the only one whose previous A grade student hit rock bottom- how can we find out the true effects on our students before they graduate so we have time to try to get them a fair deal including the extra support they may need?
