Remember when Gov. Pritzker promised gas price “relief” – just in time for his reelection campaign last year? He temporarily postponed the automatic 2 to 3 cent increase in gas taxes that was supposed to occur in July of last year.
Well that’s come and gone and Illinoisans are still getting stiffed, paying the highest gas prices of any state east of the Rockies. That’s in large part because Illinois has the second-highest gas taxes in the country, according to the American Petroleum Institute. Only Californians pay higher gas taxes.
Gov. Pritzker has done nothing about those taxes since his campaign gimmick ended.
Data from AAA shows average gas prices in the Prairie State at $4.07 on April 17. The only state to come close east of the Rockies is Pennsylvania, at $3.77.
