A partisan political group in Barrington has expressed support for candidates in school and library board races, a move criticized by the League of Women Voters, which says party politics has no place in local elections.
In an email and on Facebook this month, the Barrington Township Republican Organization backed candidates running for the Barrington Area Library, Barrington Area Unit School District 220 and Harper College boards. The candidates also are backed by a political action committee called ACTION, or “Advancing Change Together In Our Neighborhood.”
Vicki Martin, co-president of the League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area, which includes Barrington, called it “a bad precedent.” The nonpartisan group has received several calls from people concerned about this, she said.
The ACTION PAC backs Katie Karam, Malgorzata “Maggie” McGonigal and Steve Wang for the Barrington Area Unit District 220 school board, Josie Croll and Ann Ordway for Barrington Area Library board, and Kelly Dittman for Harper College trustee.
The eight other candidates for the four seats on the District 220 board are incumbents Sandra Ficke-Bradford and Mike Schakleton, and newcomers Erin Chan Ding, Tom Mitoraj, Lauren Berkowitz Klauer, William Betz, Jonathan Matta and Robert Windon. Also running for three open seats on the Harper College board are incumbents Diane G. Hill, William F. Kelley and Nancy N. Robb. And incumbents Denise Tenyer and Jennifer Lucas are also running for two open seats on the library board.
When contacted by the Daily Herald, Republican organization President Peter Kopsaftis said the support for the ACTION PAC came from him as an individual, not the organization as a whole.
“Don’t make things out of nothing,” he told a reporter. “It’s not an endorsement. It’s simply information.”

Try as you might you can’t fix stupid (although they DID kick Fritz out of their club last year).
This is news?! Leftist activists (Barrington Education Association ~ BEA) disguising themselves as a teachers union can endorse candidates and put their name on campaign materials under the auspices that it doesn’t violate campaign disclosure laws because they also list their leftist activist lobbying group iPACE and the Herald doesn’t blink an eye. Worse, they publish it as a positive?! This isn’t news and shame on the League of Women Voters who also showed their clear agenda in the questions they brought to the candidates during the school board debate (moderator said they didn’t have time for the many other questions submitted, yet 1/2 those asked were on ‘equity’ in our schools?). These groups all want to turn your schools into indoctrination camps. Wake up people! There’s an agenda, and it has nothing to do with the Action candidates pledge for fiscal conservancy. Vote Karam, McGonigal, Wang, Croll, Ordway, Stenberg & Dittman.
So, let me get this straight a group of local moms assemble to run for local offices. The teachers union freaked out because hundreds of people attend an event in support. The moms were introduced by another person who also came off the sidelines and won local office and now regional office and changed his community for the better.
Yep, better stop this in its tracks pretty soon you’ll have local citizens over seeing these boards instead of those controlled by special interests with woke agendas. Can’t have that! This is the people’s Republic of Illinois after all.
I don’t even know who these candidates are but now they’ve got my interest and I’m voting for whoever was at that event. If they have another please post!!!!!
Scary! Moms wanting better for their kids?! OMG, start the press! They must be stopped!!! 🤦♀️ Thank God we have these Action candidates to separate themselves from the leftist liberal pack of wolves. Sadly, those supported by the BEA are going to be able to outspend Action with their liberal lobbying group iPACE providing monetary and in-kind donations that BEA can hide behind. BEA is NOT non-partisan. Their agenda is very clear and D220 parents should be very afraid of them and those they endorsed.
We all should support Karin, McGonigal, and Wang to the school board. We need to retain our freedoms and not bow down to the woke indoctrination’s coming from the unstable lefties! It is critical that all parents realize what is happening in all school districts! This is how socialism to communism starts! My kids are grown, thank God, they grew up in Barrington before these liberal crazies were planning to take our freedoms away. Please parents, support these people to save your children from the racist liberals portraying groups to change the world!
I don’t understand why every time I see posts, comments and articles saying “support Karin, McGonical, etc” it’s always accompanied with name calling, labeling, alarms sounding of an impending invasion, calls to arms. I certainly haven’t seen any of these candidates say these things, so where is it coming from? I’d genuinely like to know because if anything it seems to me that if you are trying to advocate for these candidates you are also potentially branding them as fear mongers.
She bangs……
The drum of protest too much. Me doth thinks.
Vicki Martin co-President from the league of women voters in Palatine inserted herself into a political election in Barrington when she presumed partisan political support. But in her own backyard in Palatine where Democrats actually organized and coordinated with school board candidates providing resources she seems to be mute are blind to the issue.
Vicki ‘Martin Co-President of the LWV felt so compelled she reached out to the Daily Herald media regarding CUSD 220 when concerned residents contacted her. I would love to know who those concerned residents were wouldn’t you? It couldn’t be the teachers union president locally? The superintendent head of the 220 school administration? I’m certain it was just concerned moms who were voicing their opinions.
Actually not ….those are the moms that assembled to run for local office and created a financial committee to reduce costs. The Action PAC is a local grassroots organization of moms non-partisan affiliated who want our kids back in schools, get rid of the woke agenda and stop the ridiculous spending.
Vicki you might want to hand in your resignation to the LWV as your liberal bias is showing like cheap polyester slip with too much static cling.
Vote for Karam Wang McGonigal
