Earlier this month hundreds of people gathered at an event at Citizens Park in Barrington (see “Hundreds gather in Barrington ‘to educate people’ on black lives”).
Last weekend we published, “Barrington cancels July 4th parade and fireworks while postponing other summer events,” and before we knew it, a reader posted a comment that was actually weighing on our minds:
“Curious as to why fireworks, parade and family fitness run, all Barrington traditions, are cancelled but BLM rally in Citizen Park allowed?”
Perhaps there was good reason for one or two event cancellations, but isn’t the 4th of July fireworks display just a peaceful gathering in a park-like setting at dusk?
If there’s some logic here, please share it or maybe someone should ask newly appointed BACOG chair Karen Darch.
Cuz da Virus thing knows about what yer Politics is!
I attended the rally. Participants were asked to maintain 6′ social distancing. Masks and hand sanitizer were available for those who needed them. Many people wore masks in addition to maintaining social distancing. If these steps are taken, I think other events could happen relatively safely.
“da Virus thing” is destroying our community one storefront (several businesses have closed, 9-Rounds & Pine, to name a couple) and tradition at a time. Why isn’t it as important to commemorate and pay honor to the men and women who died serving in the U.S. military? Instead, we were told to gather on our lawns and have a picnic as opposed to the traditional ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery. Yet less than 2 weeks later ‘hundreds’ are allowed to gather for a rally that was represented to be organized under the Organization, Black Lives Matter, the tenets of which are founded on Marxist principles (read more than the Wiki version of the bio of the organization’s founder) and include the goal of disrupting “the Western-prescribed nuclear family.” So, if we’re going to allow these types of rallies to take place, shouldn’t we also allow those that honor the men and women who died in service to the United States and that celebrate the birth of our Nation? I feel like I’m with Alice down the rabbit hole.
