Reports of a popular Barrington Hills polo tournament’s demise turned out to be exaggerated, after the village board voted Monday to extend The Kalaway Cup Polo Event’s special use permit for the next 20 years.
Earlier this month, a proposal to extend the permit failed to receive the votes it needed from the village’s zoning board, prompting concerns that the annual competition would end after this year. Barrington Hills Polo Club President [and SOS Party campaign committeeman] John Rosene sent out a news release calling the vote “a tragedy,” and saying the event had been killed.

Polo Politicking turned out to be our own version of Chicken Little and the sky is falling. Will there be an apology of the SOS divisive smear campaign against their opponents? Don’t count on it.
I was at the meeting so shame on the Sun Times mouth piece for not telling the whole story. Two ZBA members who had some common sense asked about insurance last week. Mr Rosene was unprepared and did NOT have any answers last week. He only satisfied any insurance information last night.
It IS painful Mr. Rosene to obey rules you don’t like. Too bad…stop whining like your polo playing friend on the BOT. Polo Politicking is also painful to everyone that lives here in this village.
Beware the voter who is taken in by the other deceits spread by SOS, Save5Acres orThe Riding Club of Barrington Hills.
This nonsense has got to end soon and it will with a vote for Croll, Maison and Cecola.
Rosene as Chicken Little? I remember Meroni as Chicken Little when the Hills are Alive Fest planning was going on.
When these people can’t make an intelligent argument based on facts, they regress to their usual emotional squawking and frantic wing flapping.
Stop it already, it’s gotten really old. And painful to witness.
And soon enough, your chickens will come home to roost.
Vote One Barrington Hills to clear the coop of the bird brains.
Again a prime example of how they can take a very enjoyable and positive event like the KC and turn it into a divisive lie. And was Doug Graham even at the meeting? This guy is another Abboud mouthpiece. I don’t know how a journalist can write about events that he doesn’t attend. So where is he getting his twisted view of what occurred at these meetings that he doesn’t attend?
Answer, simple. Don’t buy the Daily Herald or Northwest Herald, both known for their bias in politics.
Actually, Mr.Graham was at the meeting. The vote for the 20 year extension is hopefully the last ‘gang of five’ (we have the votes to do anything we want) by the 5 obstructionist members of the BOT.
One good thing, however, at least Messer and Harrington broke rank and voted in favor of the 911 consolidation. Safety first. Meroni and Selman driveled about animal emergencies and isn’t it nice to be able to call the dispatch center and talk to old friends, totally ignoring the strong recommendations of our past Chief of Police and our new Chief of Police. Kudos to the new chief, who shut down the “proven leader” incumbents who were concerned that barn owners would not get responses to barn emergency calls. “We respond to every resident’s request for police assistant. We even resuscitated a dog!”
On this outlandish (are they trying for a few votes) total disregard for residents (911) safety alone, these two candidates should be overwhelmingly defeated. And yes, aren’t these the Trustees who were quoted as saying the residents don’t mind paying higher taxes?

If the LeCompte Kalaway Cup was in fact “Killed” by the ZBA last month, then why did John Rosene, President of the Barrington Hills Polo Club and SOS mouthpiece not post that dire news to his own club’s Facebook page?

Guess he knew he had the “inside track” with the block of five votes, but his crying wolf set SOS way back in credibility IMO, big time!
@ Petty Politics I agree about Rosene crying wolf about the demise of the Lecompte Cup, but beg to differ that the block of five “saved it”. There is no one I know of in the village who wants to see it go away. Witness the UNANIMOUS vote of the village board.
Phony crisis averted. Yay team!
@ Reality Bites: LeCompte Cup saved … but at sacrifice of neighbor rights! 20 years? Village unilaterally decides over written objection from neighbors how to use their property with change in access from previous Special Permit? OK in your backyard?
Abboud/Save5Acres/SOS went awry bending policy for votes and crony favoritism. Limit how a property can turn up the volume for lights (“dark skies”) because of impacts on neighbors. But, destroy FAR and Residential code and promote commercial boarding for votes and special interests despite impact on neighbors. Individual property favoritism and double standard abuse for sure, but secures voting block extremes and pays back political favors.
Government officials can’t be allowed to bend the law for special interests. And, they can’t create law to favor one land owner over another (8 year retroactive provision in Anderson II). Barrington Hills flourished under Home Occupation management of property and neighbor rights balance. Rule of law can’t be compromised for politics or votes.
Celebrate that Kalaway Cup continues, but the way it came down is still disgusting.
@Pat I agree that 20 years was ridiculous, and the early renewal was ridiculous. And the permit terms are far from ideal, but see how the polo club president still whined about it?
Strange that Meroni didn’t recuse herself from voting. After all, she chaired the LeCompte Kalaway Cup last year. No conflict of interest there, right? And Polo Joe was fine with voting too.
